Hopewell's Happenings
COMMUNICATION FOR THE HES COMMUNITY
MARCH 2024
Thank You
February was a short but busy month at HES.
Kindergarten and fifth grade celebrated 100th and 1000th day of school at the beginning of the month. The festivities included lively dancing and music performances by the 5th graders, creative projects by the kindergarteners, and a memorable combined buddy scavenger hunt to wrap up the celebration. See photos below.
The month featured informative CWF Bald Eagle presentations, delving into the world of Bald Eagles in our state. We are actively viewing the Bald Eagles at Duke Farms on our TV's in the cafeteria and Front Hallway. We are excited to announce that one egg hatched earlier and another is in progress. You can view them HERE.
Our first SOUPer Bowl of Caring occured the week before the Super Bowl. HES collected over 3,000 non-perishable food items for The Chubby's Project. The buildup and competition among the students, parents, and staff made it fun to watch all week. And the winners were....Watch the video!
Valentine's week was a flurry of activity with the 1st Grade Valentine's Day Show, Valentine's Day parties, and the week culminated in the 1st Valentine Day's Dance. See some fun photos below.
Wrapping up the month, we celebrated LEAP Year yesterday, a fitting occasion with a Frog as our mascot. Students dressed up with the theme "Leap into the Future". Teachers were leaping into different classes and Freddie was "Jumping" for joy - See our movement break video.

Nature Harmony Project Update
The Nature Harmony Project Committee has been hard at work planning new outdoor learning spaces and events for students and staff at HES. The committee, composed of both staff and parent volunteers, has met monthly throughout the year to identify additional opportunities to promote outdoor education each day.
To support our efforts, the Nature Harmony Project Committee, in partnership with the Green Team, will be hosting a Color Run on Saturday, April 27th at 11am. Additional announcement and details to follow. We hope to see you there!
Global Day of Unplugging
March 1-2, sundown to sundown, is the Global Day of Unplugging. The Global Day of Unplugging is an international campaign to promote human connection by encouraging us to put down our devices. Whether we can commit to an hour or a day, it is time to log off our computers, social media platforms, and streaming services and make human connections with others. On March 1st, join the Global Day of Unplugging by committing to time without your device. Ready to unplug but don’t know where to start? Here is a list of fun ideas to get you started.
Hopewell Valley's Night Off is March 7th!
One of the most anticipated evenings of the year is coming soon! Designed in response to the increasing demands of work and school on personal and family time, this community-wide initiative was created for families to “take the night off” to spend time together. With the support of school officials, sports leaders, parents, community and religious leaders, all sports practices, classes and homework will be canceled on this special evening. Make it a tech-free night! Don't know what to do with your night off? Visit this link for some great ideas!
World Language Week
Next week Hopewell Elementary School will be honoring National World Language Week. This is a week to celebrate the many languages spoken in our community and to raise awareness about the importance of learning and speaking another language. Did you know that there are over almost 7,000 languages spoken worldwide? Many of these languages are spoken by students in our school. This week HES will get to hear students speaking in many languages!
2024 AIR T-Shirt Contest
Every year, AIR (Attitudes in Reverse) runs a t-shirt contest for students in elementary through high school. The AIR plan is to start one-on-one conversations to raise awareness, increase empathy, encourage early intervention and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. Designs must include the words “AIR Attitudes in Reverse” (not necessarily together) and may also include “Are you AIR Aware?” or “Take a Breath” or “Kin is the new cool!” or “Remember to Breathe.” Entry/Release form must be received no later than Friday, March 22, 2024. The release and contest information can be found HERE.

Counselor Corner
We made great use of the extra LEAP day this year by engaging in activities and discussions focused on the trait of Honesty last month. Students were honest about their feelings, learned about the importance of telling the truth and were encouraged to be their authentic selves. Our focus for the month of March is Cooperation. Cooperation is working together to reach shared goals.
In addition, International SEL Day is celebrated in the month of March. Students and staff will engage in activities to practice social-emotional learning (SEL) in recognition and celebration of the day. If you’d like to join in on the fun and increase Cooperation in your family, follow this link to take part in our family SEL activities: 2024 Families SEL DAY OF PLAY.
As always, please reach out if you need any assistance via phone at 609-737-4007 x7206 or email at ashleylarose@hvrsd.org.
Kind Minds Presentation
Last month our school was privileged to host the “Kind Minds'' presentations from our friends over at the Mind Your Mind organization. This organization believes that an awareness of mental health can begin in elementary school. They delivered two interactive presentations with our students in Kindergarten-4th grade covering some very important topics such as identifying emotions, building empathy, engaging in kind acts, and understanding how our feelings can impact both our thoughts and choices. The primary goal of these presentations was to provide our students with some helpful tools they can use to create meaningful connections, leading to consistent emotional wellness. Our friends from the organization were also kind enough to provide our teaching staff with some fun and educational resources that they can use in the classroom to help reinforce these valuable concepts long after the conclusion of the presentations. Feel free to use this LINK to access these supplemental materials at home too.
