National Science Bee (NSB)
5 OGS students have the opportunity to attend!
What is the NSB? The National Science bee is a buzzer-based competition in which students compete to buzz faster than the others and answer the question correctly. Sounds pretty easy, right? But here's the catch, only three people can buzz per question, and the third person to buzz in during the question gets a penalty of -1 points. There are three rounds, each against different students, and once a student answers six questions correctly, they exit the round. Points are received depending on their placement during the round and how early or late they exited the round. After three rounds are complete, the top 50ish percent make it to nationals, and the top 30-40 percent make regional finals.
Oak Grove Students with the opportunity to attend:
Jasmine Kumar, 3rd place, elementary
Jack Davis, 3rd place, 8th grade
Shriteja Patil, 2nd place, 8th grade online
Hamza Alsawaf, 1st place, 7th grade
Sanchari Dasgupta, 7th place, 7th grade
Hamza said, "The competition was really exciting and intense. There was a strong sense of competition, but also an understood acceptance of each other and our abilities."
Sanchari added, "Though it was a hard challenge, both us and the others did our best and made it to nationals… This was the first time Oak Grove participated in the IAC’s, and we did great!"
Nationals will take place in Orlando, Florida from June 17-21. The winner of the competition gets a $300 prize. Good luck Oak Grovers!
New Families and Pictures!
If you’re new to Oak Grove and missed any previous opportunities to have your picture taken, now is your chance :) Pictures will take place on Thursday, April 14th. Students who have participated in clubs and sports this year will also be called down to have their picture taken with their club and team sponsors and teammates.
Late Winter/Early Spring Open Houses - Return Next Year!
Due to the unknown health mitigations in January, when we usually start planning for open houses in classrooms, we did not plan for open houses this spring. However, as long as we continue down the path of healthier times, we will again host open houses next school year.
In the time being, we look forward to celebrating many other spring events with our students and families, including: Track, the Multicultural Fair, the BOGO book fair, Band concerts at LHS and OGS, class “picnics” and other grade level activities, the Variety Show, and many more!
