News and Notes for Parents at Plymouth North
24 Days to Go...
It has been an incredible year at Plymouth North!
There have been so many reasons to celebrate this year, from athletics and academic successes, regional and state recognition, and even national acclaim from just about every corner of Eagle Nation. As we enter this final stretch, we will have lots of opportunities to reflect, reminisce and celebrate all those successes as well as our remarkable group of graduating seniors.
Not lost on any of us here at PNHS is the fact that some of our largest successes are the small victories and achievements that students have made overcoming personal obstacles over day-to-day struggles across every classroom in our school. It's the learning growth, the personal growth and the undoubted gain of skills that happen in the quiet, every day moments that are the biggest achievements in our school this year.
So while we will be celebrating the banners and major achievements with lots of volume and fanfare over the next few weeks, it's the progress that all of our students have made in their own growth that is really what we celebrate most. It's the growth in learning, character, confidence and grit that is the real reason that Plymouth North and our efforts are so integral at helping to propel our students to meet high expectations, makes our town a better place, and has a positive impact on the world around us.
So, lets all celebrate loudly for EVERY success this year, big and small, from EVERY student this year! They are all incredible!
Here's to a strong finish to an amazing school year!
GO EAGLES! See you at one or more of our many upcoming events!

2. Teacher Spotlight
Across the country, there is a teacher shortage and great teachers are leaving the profession in droves for a myriad of reasons.
Here at North, we have incredible teachers and we want them to know how much we appreciate them! Here are three examples of great teachers here at PNHS that are worth celebrating! Make sure you thank them for all the effort they put into helping your children grow!
Mr. Nielsen, Engineering
Courses Taught: Engineering CCTE Program, Grade 9-12
In Class Yesterday: Students used the knowledge from their gear ratio calculations to craft a Design Brief for a "client" looking to them to build a Capacitor Car Project.
Students Say: "Mr. Nielsen is very supportive and helps students every step of the way. He's a great guy and lots of fun to be around" -Senior
His Dept. Head Says: "Mr. Nielsen is almost always the last person to leave and spends his nights and weekends preparing his students for Robotics competitions or helping them with their projects. He is passionate about engineering and that transfers to his classroom. We are very lucky to have him at North!
Ms. Patch, Special Ed
Courses Taught: Skills, Topics of Adv. Math, Geometry & Algebra 2
In Class Yesterday: Students worked individually with Ms. Patch at building skills and strategies to help meet IEP goals while engaging with their coursework in Skills class.
Students Say: "Ms. Patch is always willing to put kids ahead of herself and expresses so much care for her kids. She helps all of us achieve our personal goals" -Senior
Our Assistant Principal Says: "Ms. Patch is especially good at working with and motivating our at-risk students. Her supportive and encouraging approach has worked to help lots of students believe in themselves. Her skill, effort and care has allowed students the opportunity to set and to reach some incredibly lofty goals!"
Mr. Carpenito, EL
Courses Taught: EL Dept. Head, Beginner English Language Learners
In Class Yesterday: Students listened as a class to common exchanges in English, then collaborated with their peers to help build their English proficiency.
Students Say: "Mr. Carpenito is the definition of empathy. He is always there for his students and helpful to all of us!" -Sophomore
The Director of Student Services says: "Mr. Carpenito's special skill set and work with our Multilingual Learners is truly outstanding. He really gets to know his students and their unique backgrounds as he works tirelessly to deliver high quality impactful ESL instruction. He is also a tremendous resource for staff."
3. NCTE Writing Achievement Award!
We recently learned that Caitlin Richer was recognized with the First Class Level of writing this year in the NCTE Writing Achievement Awards. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing are a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school Juniors to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation.
Caitlin was one of only 100 students across the nation, and only 5 in Massachusetts that earned this distinction this year!
Congratulations to Caitlin, her family and her teachers on this incredible achievement!
4. Grade 9 & 10 MCAS Testing Upcoming
All Grade 10 students will be required to participate in Math MCAS testing during the school day on both May 21st and 22nd.
All Grade 9 students will be required to participate in Biology MCAS testing during the school day on both June 4th and 5th.
Passing the test is a state graduation requirement. Tests are now computer based and taken on student's PPS Issued Chromebook.
Students report directly to their testing assignment room that is organized alphabetically by last name and posted in each of the lobbies and reviewed with students in Advisory prior to the test. Testing begins right at the start of the school day on testing days.
Please encourage your child to be in school, on time with their charged PPS issued chromebook, ready to do their best!
Reminder: Our incredible cafeteria staff serves free breakfast every morning in the cafeteria for students!

13. ThinkFast Initiative Jr/Sr Distracted Driving Assembly
As we approach this season of celebration, we're working to both get our students celebrating but to do it while making safe, good choices.
Back in March, with the help of Health Teacher Mr. Perry, we welcomed Kathi & Chris Sullivan who shared their incredibly powerful personal stories of tragedy and struggle to help encourage our upperclassmen to make smart decisions, take care of each other and seek out help when they need it.
On May 14th, in partnership with the Massachusetts State Police, our School Resource Officer Shawn Ireland helped to bring a nation wide assembly to North regarding distracted driving that will be presented to all Juniors and Seniors in a last period assembly.
The ThinkFast Initiative is proud to provide an individualized, evidence-informed, and cost-effective plan for reducing motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities among teen drivers in the states they serve. The assembly is crafted as a fun, interactive program that conveys the importance of safety information with peer engagement and rewards.

Of those 16, Sebastian Kazakov and Ethan Borges placed 2nd in the State in the Mobile Robotics Competition at SkillsUSA. The Sophomore Engineering students did an amazing job!
