Wildcat Weekly 10/14-10/18

Hi Wildcats! 🐾
Hi Wildcats!
October 14-18, 2024, is National School Lunch Week. Please join us in thanking the dedicated school nutrition professionals who help ensure our students are well fed and ready to learn. The Food and Nutrition Department serves more than 17,000 lunches every school day, featuring seasonal produce and milk from local farms, entrees rich in whole grains and lean protein, and options for varied food preferences. During National School Lunch Week, we recognize and appreciate the important role that nutrition plays in supporting student success.
We encourage all Wildcats to maintain healthy habits as we head into the annual cold and flu season. So far this school year, about 60% of student absences are due to illness. While we encourage students to stay home while they are sick, we also want to promote habits that will help our students stay healthy which include;
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. If you don’t have a tissue handy, cough or sneeze into the corner of your arm. Demonstrate this technique to your children so they know how to cough and sneeze without spreading germs.
- Wash your hands. Keeping your hands clean will help protect you from germs. If you can’t get to a sink with soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Be sure your children know proper handwashing techniques.
- Enough sleep and a healthy diet. Make sure you and your family are getting plenty of sleep and eating healthy meals. Keep everyone hydrated by drinking water regularly.
Attendance Matters
Regular school attendance is critical to each student's educational success. Missing several days of school in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.

We appreciate your partnership in supporting our Wildcats and making sure each student is healthy, happy, and ready to learn at school each day.

👻 Here Comes Halloween 🎃
Costumes
Students are invited to wear their costumes to school on Thursday, Oct. 31 for Halloween. Please remember we are a preschool-5th grade school so we would love if students avoided scary and gory costumes so that little ones are not frightened. Masks can be worn during our Halloween parade, but should be put away after that. Any weapons that are part of a costume (even fake ones) need to be left at home.
Parade
Our annual Halloween Parade will start at 9:00 on Oct. 31 and students will circle through the school with their class so that we can see everyone’s costumes. Parents are invited to attend and watch. You may enter campus through the upper gate at 8:45 and can stand on the playground to watch students walk by. After the parade ends you will exit out the top gate. We are happy to have you here, and appreciate you following this procedure.
Treats
Due to the many allergies and food sensitivities among our students, if you would like to send something in for a Halloween treat, we request that you send in FOOD FREE options. We encourage items such as pencils, stickers, or bookmarks.
If you are helping with a classroom party and/or activity please refer to the district Smart Snack Standards as you plan. (attached)

Soccer Shots ⚽
There is still time to enroll in Soccer Shots for the fall season!
Soccer Shots is an enrichment program that teaches children social and emotional skills through the game of soccer. The program runs directly after school on Thursdays until 2:30 P.M. Click here to enroll. Park options for 2-10 year olds are also available.
Student Absences
Every day that students are present at school is important to their academic success and social-emotional wellbeing. It is very important that students arrive at school on time, and attend school every day unless they are sick, or are attending to a family emergency.
What happens when my child needs to miss school?
Parents should notify the school for all student absences. To report an absence for your child, please call the attendance hotline (858-679-2604) or email pmesattendance@powayusd.com
Only Parents and legal guardians may call the hotline and/or excuse an absence. The hotline and email are available 24 hours. We verify all absences every day, if at the end of the day we do not hear from you your student will be marked truant until you notify us of the reason for their absence. Once we hear from you then the truant code will be corrected to reflect the reason for the absence.
