Talley Street Update
August 4, 2022
Dear Talley Street Community,
It has been a great start to the new school year! It has been wonderful seeing all the students back in the building. Thank you for your cooperation with the transportation issues around Talley Street. It has gone fairly smoothly with your help. Please remember that parking is not allowed at the Dekalb County building on Sams Street and the Public Works Building next to Talley. We have been told that cars will be towed. I hope to see everyone on Saturday at our PTO’s Popsicle Social. Have a great afternoon!

Talley Street School Leadership Team (SLT) Elections
The Talley Street Upper Elementary School Leadership Team (SLT) is an elected committee consisting of Talley Street's parents/guardians, staff members and other personnel. The SLT is focused on school governance, student achievement, and family engagement. Some of the responsibilities of this team are to:
- Serve on interview teams
- Develop, approve, and monitor the continuous school improvement planning process
- Review assessment data and use it for decision-making purposes
- Review and approve changes to its bylaws
- Recommend school needs to the CSD Board of Education during the annual budget process.
SLT members are elected to their positions except for appointed positions. Parents may attend to present an idea/concern at SLT work sessions. SLT meetings are open and stakeholders are welcome to attend (look for dates in the Talley Street Update).
To vote in the SLT election, you must be a parent/guardian of a Talley Street Student. If you are interested in joining the SLT, please submit a candidate statement with biographical information and a paragraph explaining why you want to be a SLT member to Mr. Heaton (bheaton@csdecatur.net) by Friday, August 12, 2022. Each family will receive one vote per enrolled student. Keep in mind that the most important requirement of an SLT member is to have an honest desire to contribute to the educational experience and learning of all children at Talley Street Upper Elementary School.
Details:
All candidate statements are due August 12th to Mr. Heaton
All candidate statements will be published in a school eBlast, Talley Street webpage, and the principal’s Facebook page.
Elections will take place on August 24th and August 25th. A Google form will be eBlasted out on the morning of the 24th. More information on the Curriculum Night will be coming out soon.
We hope you will consider being a part of this very important work.

STEM Needs 2 Liter Bottles!
Starting next week, we will need 2 liter bottles for a 3rd grade project. If you have any laying around your house, please send them in! I am also still looking for round tops from bottles of milk, drinks, sodas, medicine, anything! These make great wheels. We will ALWAYS take paper towel and toilet paper rolls and any other cool recyclables that you have around the house. Finally, we will be opening our "Tinker Table" soon, so if you have any old electronics that you want to get rid of, we would love to be able to take them apart!

Girls on the Run - Coaches Needed!
Join the Coaching Team at Talley Street as a MENTOR for girls in 3-5th grade!
We need coaches!
We are in need of volunteer IN PERSON coaches for next season! Coaches are MENTORS who help inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum (provided by Girls on the Run), which creatively integrates running. At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. It is NOT required to be a runner, athlete, or identify as female to be a coach! We cannot have any teams at Talley if we do not have enough volunteers to coach, so please consider joining our coaching team next season!
Here is what you can expect:
Fill out a coaches application and complete a background check
Attend a virtual training session AND an in person training session with GOTR Atlanta
Attend a virtual pre-season Talley Coaches Meeting
Commit to 1-2 days a week of coaching (Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs from 2:30-4:00) during the season
Support your fellow co-coaches, take turns leading lessons based on the detailed GOTR Curriculum you will be provided
This program has proven to have a positive impact on the girls who participate. Be prepared for it to have a positive impact on you, too!
Fall 2022 Dates
Lottery Closes Aug. 30th
Practice Begins Week of Sep. 12th

Please reach out to Natalie Bundschu at nbundschu@csdecatur.net if you or anyone you know is interested in coaching this season. We would love to have as many coaches as possible and are happy to work with your availability. If possible, we would especially love coaches who could commit to coming back to coach once or twice a year for future seasons.
Girls on the Run - Join the Team!
Join our IN-PERSON teams at Talley Street! Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running. At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-5th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.

Community Updates
Decatur Education Foundation
Welcome back to a new school year! We are so excited to be back, it’s going to be a great year! DEF works in partnership with City Schools of Decatur to ensure that every student has what they need to learn and thrive. We have several programs in place to do just that: Virtual Pals Tutoring Program, AIM Scholars Mentoring Program, and a BRAND NEW program for high schoolers, FOCUS Prep Program. We need volunteers for each program to be a success, so please read below to learn how you can help.
Tutoring: We are continuing our Virtual Pals tutoring program in which we pair a 2nd-8th grade student with an upper high school student or adult volunteer to help with homework, time management, and motivation. If you would like to sign your student up for the program, you can go here: https://forms.gle/SjYinSLJkZ363pi57 If you would like to help as a volunteer tutor, you can apply here: https://forms.gle/YTbDUk8H4iS4qfD57 (High school students can earn volunteer hours!)
Mentoring: Covid has made it VERY difficult for our mentor pairs to meet these last two years. We’re renewing the program with fervor this school year, and need male and female adult mentors to volunteer 2-4 hours per month with our new third-grade cohort. For a mentor application, click here: https://forms.gle/DNFkXJyTCKTaFd1S9
FOCUS Prep: Finding Opportunities to Create yoUr Success Prep is just for high school students who want a little extra “coaching” to reach their post-secondary goals. High schoolers will be paired with volunteer coaches who will encourage, motivate, and hold them accountable. Coaches will receive training from College Ave Consulting to know how best to help with career research, college applications, financial aid, and time lines! Time commitment is only 2-3 hours per month for the school year. If you’d like to become a coach, click here: https://forms.gle/F73gdN5fxzXqET5o7. If your high schooler is interested in the program, please click here: https://forms.gle/zYMUsPJQ1Wv7uiNs8
You can also find all forms and information at our website, www.decatureducationfoundation.org/mentoring. Together we make a difference for our kids!
