Principal's Note
A Note From Principal Danielson
Dear Parents, Families, and Community Members,
As the year winds down, I want to take a moment to reflect on the achievements and highlights of the past few months at Shelby Middle School. December is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness, and we are grateful for the strong partnership we share with each of you in supporting our students' growth and success.
This month, our school is bustling with activity. From winter concerts showcasing our talented musicians and vocalists to holiday-themed service projects led by our student council, there are so many opportunities for our students to shine and give back to the community. I encourage you to attend these events and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our students and staff.
As we approach winter break, I want to remind families of the importance of remaining engaged in your child’s learning. Regularly check their grades, encourage them to ask for help if needed, and talk with them about what they are learning in their classes. This partnership helps reinforce the value of education and sets the stage for a strong start to 2025. Kids respond to knowing that the adults in their lives care about their success!
Attendance also remains a critical part of student success. Every school day matters, and we appreciate your efforts to ensure your child attends regularly. The upcoming 10-day winter break, from a half day on December 20 to January 5, is a great time for students to recharge, spend time with loved ones, and catch up on any missed assignments or extra reading. For students needing extra support, don’t forget that our SMS Tutoring Program is available every Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get personalized help and stay on track academically.
Thank you for your continued support, involvement, and dedication to our school community. On behalf of the entire staff, I wish you a joyful holiday season filled with peace, love, and laughter.
Here's to a strong finish to 2024 and an inspiring start to the new year!
Warm regards,
Mrs. Danielson

Connecting as a Family During the Holidays
The holiday season is a wonderful opportunity to pause from the busyness of daily life and focus on what matters most: quality time with loved ones. It’s not just about gifts or grand celebrations—it’s about connection, creating memories, and strengthening bonds that last long after the holidays are over.
Here are some simple and meaningful ways your family can connect this holiday season:
1. Create New Traditions Together
Traditions are a powerful way to bring families together. Whether it’s baking cookies, making handmade decorations, or watching a favorite holiday movie, involve everyone in the process. These shared experiences help build a sense of belonging and joy.
2. Unplug and Be Present
Set aside time to disconnect from screens and reconnect with each other. Plan a family game night, go for a walk to see holiday lights, or share stories over a warm meal. Being fully present with your loved ones is the best gift you can give.
3. Give Back as a Family
The holidays are a great time to practice gratitude and generosity. Volunteer at a local shelter, donate to a charity, or create care packages for those in need. These activities not only help others but also teach children the value of kindness and community.
4. Reflect on the Year Together
Take time to talk as a family about the highlights and lessons of the past year. Celebrate accomplishments, acknowledge challenges, and discuss hopes for the coming year. This can be a meaningful way to connect on a deeper level and foster gratitude.
5. Plan Quality One-on-One Time
In addition to family activities, spend individual time with each family member. A simple walk, conversation, or shared activity can help strengthen unique bonds within the family.
The holidays can sometimes feel overwhelming with to-do lists and commitments, but prioritizing connection over perfection can make the season truly special. It’s these shared moments, not material things, that leave a lasting impact.
On behalf of everyone at our school, we wish you a holiday season filled with love, laughter, and togetherness. Thank you for being an important part of our school family, and we look forward to continuing to grow together in the new year!

Attendance is Important!
Students who are chronically absent or receiving Fs in the middle grades are at very high risk of being off-track for graduation in ninth grade, and eventually dropping out of school
School Attendance Policy
It is imperative that students be in attendance each school day in order not to miss a significant portion of their education. Important learning result from active participation in classroom and other school activities which cannot be replaced by individual study.
Attendance is important in the development of a high-quality work ethic which will be a significant factor in a student’s success with future employers. One of the most important work habits that employers look for in hiring and promoting a worker is his or her dependability in coming to work every day and on time. This is a habit the school wants to help students develop as early as possible in their school careers.
ADE, or Absence Doctor’s Excused with proper medical documentation are the only verifiable absences.
Verifiable absences are only those documented by a physician, dentist, counselor or other health professional, or funeral as determined by the building principal. Unverifiable absences are any other absences including those that are prearranged. *** It is important that parents/guardians understand that notes from home or call-in’s will not be counted as verifiable absences.
5 days absent = Letter from the school regarding absences
10 days absent = 10 Day Truancy letter from school and meeting with student
10+ days absent = Possible Referral to Truancy Officer
What the research says....
Absenteeism in middle and high school can predict dropout rates. As early as 6th grade, absenteeism becomes an indicator that a student will drop out, Johns Hopkins University research shows. Other early warning signs include poor grades in core courses and behavior leading to suspensions. A statewide study in Utah found that a student who is chronically absent in any year between 8th and 12th grade is 7.4 times more likely to drop out.
Just a reminder...We are an away for the day school!
Cell phones, ear buds etc. are not to be in class.
In today’s digital age, it’s essential for students to keep their cell phones away during the school day. Here’s why:
Enhances Learning and Focus
- Reduces Distractions: Without phones, students can focus better on lessons and assignments.
- Promotes Participation: Students engage more in class discussions and activities.
Encourages Social Interaction
- Fosters Communication: Direct interactions build stronger relationships and improve social skills.
- Builds Community: Engaging without screens creates a more inclusive school environment.
Improves Academic Performance
- Supports Study Habits: Students develop better study routines without phone interruptions.
- Reduces Cheating: Limits access to information during tests, maintaining academic integrity.
Promotes Digital Well-Being
- Limits Screen Time: Reduces the negative effects of excessive screen use, like eye strain and anxiety.
- Teaches Boundaries: Encourages a balanced approach to technology use.
Ensures Safety and Privacy
- Protects Information: Reduces risks of privacy breaches and cyberbullying.
- Prevents Recordings: Lessens the chance of unauthorized photos or videos.
By keeping cell phones away, students can better focus on their education, interact meaningfully, and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.
