Headteacher's Introduction
As we approach the end of this half term, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made at Bishop Challoner. It has been a time of growth, learning, and achievement, and I feel privileged to be part of such a dynamic and diverse school community.
Our students have shown resilience and determination, embracing new challenges and opportunities. They have tackled complex projects and grown both academically and personally. The dedication and enthusiasm of our staff have been instrumental in helping them reach new heights, and I’m deeply grateful for their hard work and commitment.
Outside the classroom, there have been many highlights. Our Student Council has been actively representing student voices, working on initiatives to enhance school life. Our weekly Masses in church have provided moments of reflection and unity, strengthening our sense of community. When we return, we will continue our spiritual journey with Ash Wednesday liturgies.
Looking ahead, students will soon be sitting their Grade Indicator Exams, an important step in tracking progress and setting goals. We are also excited to showcase creativity and talent in the upcoming Art Exhibition, celebrating the fantastic work of our students.
I would like to thank our families and governors for their ongoing support. Together, we are building a thriving school environment, and I’m excited for what’s to come in the months ahead.
I wish everyone a restful break and look forward to another term of growth and success.
Yours in Service,
Adam Hall
Executive Headteacher

🔬"Year 11 explored ecology by climbing the food chain of knowledge! From producers to top predators, they deepened their understanding of ecosystems!" ~ Mr Larkin
We stand firmly against antisemitism and all forms of discrimination and reaffirm our commitment to challenging prejudice and division and celebrating our diversity.
📚 Our wonderful Year 8 students have had a flying start this half term, gathering in the library at lunch to read, complete their homework, and even discuss important student council matters. Here’s what some of them said about the space and how it helps them:
"I go to the library because I find it relaxing, calming, and interesting." – Sofia, Year 8
"I enjoy reading because I can indulge in lots of fun and creative fiction in a quiet environment. It lets me enjoy time by myself. I can also do homework here, which I sometimes can't do at home." – Azhar, Year 8
"I really love the library. It's always interesting coming here every day. There are lots of fun and interesting books to read, including dystopian, romance, classics, and fantasy! This is also a really good place for doing homework online." – Keyaan, Year 8
🎭 "As part of EduHam (Hamilton Education Program), Year 9 took part in a drama and careers workshop as a follow-up to seeing the live production of 'Hamilton' in December. Forty-six students explored the themes and style of the musical through music and improvisation. They then considered the various roles needed to produce a full-scale show, from acting to law. A fabulous day was had by all!" ~ Mrs Ferry
🎨Year 9 and 10 Art students gathered in the school library today for a presentation by the artist-run organisation Auto Italia. The session provided an insightful overview of the diverse career opportunities within the creative industries and highlighted the valuable skills gained through studying Art at GCSE and A level.
✨ The Year 7, 8 & 9 Dance Club did incredibly well in the Christmas showcase!
🔠 Year 10 enjoyed an engaging game of Sentence Stealer, a great combination of fun and learning!
Catholic Life
Mass
A Mass to commission our prefect team was celebrated in the school chapel on our return in January. Badges were blessed and students reflected on servant leadership. We look forward to working with the prefect team this year.
Weekly Masses in Saint Mary and St Michael's church are now a welcome part of the rhythm of school life. Each Wednesday a different year group celebrates Mass after break - providing a regular opportunity to receive Christ and listen to the word of God.
Liturgies/Celebrations of the Word
Weekly Liturgical assemblies ensure that each student takes part in regular collective worship. These celebrations follow the Liturgical calendar and Sunday Gospel readings and also take in key memorials and celebrations. Themes so far this year have included the Jubilee Year, Holocaust Memorial Day and Black History Month. Ash Wednesday liturgies will take place when we return, with each year group beginning one lesson in the theatre celebrating a short liturgy and then receiving ashes from our prefect team.
Staff Prayer
A group meet in the chapel every Wednesday at 8:00 for staff prayer. Meetings this term have included adoration, Lectio Divina and the spiritual exercises of Fr Anthony De Mello.
Interfaith
We are incredibly proud of the religious diversity of our community. Jummah prayer takes place every Friday in our Drama Pod and we have a well resourced multifaith prayer room. We are currently planning interfaith events to celebrate the crossover between Lent and Ramadan this year.
A Prayer to say together at home.
Dear Lord God,
You created balance.
The night to follow the day.
The sea to touch the earth.
All the wonderful animals, fish and birds.
You are the great creator of variety and diversity.
Thank you that you made us all to be unique and reflect your love.
Come draw our family together in all its wonder and beauty.
Help us to love and respect each other.
Show us how to support and encourage one another.
Inspire us to work together to become a picture full of your perfect love.

Antarctic Flags
Our flag has made it all the way to Antarctica! 🌍❄️
Taken by Emma Pearce, a glaciologist on the RIFT TIP drilling project, the flag was photographed outside the Halley VI research station. The team is working on ice core drilling at the Halloween Ice Crack to study the ice and how it fractures.
A huge shoutout to the UK Polar Network - thank you for working with our school community to get our flag to Antarctica!

Embracing Growth: Navigating the Sixth Form Journey and Beyond
Chidubem
Life at sixth form is the transition from the familiarity of earlier school years to the responsibility and independence needed for adulthood. It’s a time that comes with various duties, including academic challenges and personal growth, allowing for the practice of self-discipline and time management.
In terms of academics, sixth form really emphasises results due to the heavy workload, constant deadlines, and the preparations for university applications. This creates a sense of pressure that most students feel, especially when trying to excel. But at Bishop Challoner, students are given the support they need to manage this pressure. There are academic and external opportunities designed to help balance out the workload.
For example, students can attend several academic talks from universities, giving insights into different aspects of university life. There’s also an enrichment programme that encourages personal growth, helping students build friendships and self-confidence. In this way, sixth form keeps a balance between being academically demanding and rewarding, preparing students for the future.
Raolat
In my seven years at Bishop Challoner, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to excel and broaden my horizons through both supercurricular and extracurricular activities. Through the school’s partnerships with various organisations, I’ve been able to gain a lot of insight into different workplaces. These opportunities are really valuable because they help me set clearer goals for my future.
Before my work experience placement with Allen & Overy, I wasn’t sure where I was headed in life. But after that experience, I had a clearer sense of direction and a real goal to work towards, one that was inspired by the opportunities the school provided. It gave me the chance to think about what I actually want to do after sixth form.
The school has helped me find the confidence to make bold choices, like deciding to take the apprenticeship/degree apprenticeship route instead of going the traditional university route. I’m surrounded by teachers and students who push me to achieve great things, and I feel like I’m part of a community that truly cares about my success

Our Form Saints in Focus - St. Teresa of Kolkata
St. Teresa of Kolkata (1910-1997), born in Albania, dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor. After joining the Sisters of Loreto, she moved to India, where she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Her work with the destitute, sick, and dying in Kolkata touched the lives of countless individuals around the world.
Known for her selfless service, love, and unwavering faith, she became a symbol of compassion and hope. Despite facing many challenges, St. Teresa's devotion to God and humanity never wavered.
Her life teaches students the importance of serving others with love, finding God in everyday acts, and embracing the dignity of each person. St. Teresa of Kolkata reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a profound difference in the world, and that a life of faith and service is the truest form of love.
