KDLA's Storytelling Collection
Calling all aspiring storytellers! Did you know that the State Library has a Storytelling Collection? In 2021, the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) created the Storytelling Collection in the hope that "through study, practice and performance, the artistic treasure of storytelling will be preserved for generations to come." This collection was created with the assistance of the renowned International Storytelling Center (ISC) in Jonesboro, TN, a nonprofit, educational, arts, and cultural institution "dedicated to enriching lives and building a better world through the power of storytelling." It’s full of books with folktales from around the world and CDs of master storytellers practicing their craft. There are even “how to” books if you’re looking for some fun storytelling activities or need a muse for your own storytelling adventures. So, if you've ever dreamed of becoming a professional storyteller or a "just for fun" teller of tall tales, explore this incredible resource and hone your yarn spinning skills. And of course, you can check out the CDs and folktale books just for the enjoyment of listening to or reading some fabulous fables! For more information, click the button below to check out our Storytelling Collection page and read about some of the expert raconteurs featured in the collection. All Storytelling Collection titles are listed in the KDLA Catalog. To locate the Storytelling Collection materials, type “KDLA Storytelling Collection” (quotes included) into the search box. If you find an item you'd like to check out in our catalog, just click on the blue Send To My Office button on the right hand side of the item record and we'll send it to the primary address in your account profile.
Staff Picks
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
First published in 1959, The Haunting of Hill House remains a narrative of spine chilling terror by a genre defining author of psychological horror. The story follows four seekers who arrive at the notoriously ghoulish Hill House, the site of several violent family deaths: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for evidence of the paranormal; his assistant, Theodora; Eleanor, a shy young woman with a difficult, stifling family life and a debatable grasp on reality; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. It has been a finalist for the National Book Award, made into two feature films, a play, and most recently served as the basis for a Netflix series in 2018. The Haunting of Hill House has also been hailed as one of The Atlantic’s "Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years."

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow
Starling House is a richly, gothic novel with elements of horror, fantasy, and romance set in the fictional, dying coal town of Eden, Kentucky. The main character, Opal, desperately needs money to get her teen brother out of poverty, so she takes a job at Starling House, long a place of suspicion, and even terror, for the townspeople. In the moldy, crumbling mansion, Opal forms an uneasy alliance with Arthur Starling, the last lonely heir of the Starling legacy. Together, they will take on the mysteries of Starling House, and their own traumatic histories, while fending off sinister forces converging on Eden. True to the long heritage of authors writing Gothic fiction as a way to process society's ills, Harrow touches on significant themes such as environmental concerns, as well as women's and class issues. With a mix of sardonic humor, atmospheric detail, and lavishly drawn characters, it's no wonder that Starling House has been a Reese's Book Club Pick, New York Times Bestseller, and one of the Washington Post's Noteworthy Books for October.

You Never Know: A Memoir by Tom Selleck
For those wanting lighter fare, as an Amazon Editor's Pick, this memoir is a must-read for fans of the beloved actor. In his own voice, the authentic and funny Selleck describes his somewhat accidental journey into show biz; recounts his personal friendships with top Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett, and James Garner; clears up misconceptions; and explains the difficulty of balancing his professional and personal lives, fiercely working to protect his family's privacy. His memoir offers a refreshing viewpoint on an ever changing industry and world.
