Focus on Learning: Planner/Handbook, Homework Folders, No Cell Phones
Planner/Handbook: We spent the first week teaching our Guiding Principles (Belonging, Success, Safety, Freedom & Choices, and Fun) along with campus expectations to all students. You can access our planner/handbook here or on our website. Your child also has a copy of our planner.
Please review our school expectations with your child
We also expect students to use their planner daily to keep track of assignments and due dates
Homework Folders: All students were given a yellow homework planner to help them track the items that need to go home along with items that need to be returned to school.
Ask your child about their homework folder
Emphasis on Learning = No Cell Phones: Students have done a tremendous job following our expectations that cell phones/airpods/personal electronic devices are put away during the school day except before school, at lunch, and after school. Thank you to our families for supporting our staff with this and only contacting your student during their lunch time OR calling our office (253-891-5000) if you need to get a message to your student during class time.
SMS Parent Booster Fundraiser, Sept 24 at Dairy Queen, 5-8pm
Visit the Bonney Lake Dairy Queen on September 24 from 5-8pm, and the SMS Boosters will receive 15% of all orders that mention SMS. Families must mention Sumner Middle School when ordering their meal. Read here for more information.
Who are the Boosters? They are SMS parents who volunteer their time to support SMS students and staff. SMS activities that the Boosters support are providing incentives for our positive recognition program, purchasing items to be used in student clubs, and helping with our end-of-the-year student celebrations. If you are interested in volunteering with our Boosters, see the Stay Connected section below. We deeply appreciate our Boosters!
Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures
- When dropping off or picking up your student, there are designated areas in our front loop (right in front of our school) where vehicles are not allowed to stop. The expectation is to pull all the way through to the end of the loop. This helps reduce traffic issues on Willow Street which helps keep our students safe. Please follow directions from SMS staff members.
- Always watch for students as you turn into our parking lots and do not encourage your child to cross the street on Willow unless your child is in a crosswalk.
- If your child rides their bike to school, remind them to follow the rules of the road and to not cross in front of cars.
- Your support of these safety practices help keep all of our students safe.
Clubs and Activities
Belonging and Fun are two of our Guiding Principles. To help all students find a place to belong and have fun, we are offering the following clubs this year:
Morning Basketball
Game Club
Video Game Club
Photography Club
Yarn Art Club
Specific dates and meeting times for these clubs will be shared with students and parents in the coming weeks.
Students MUST turn in a completed permission form to the club adviser in order to participate. Permission forms can be found in our main office and in our Commons.
State Law and Required Attendance
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and staff care about the well-being and academic achievement of each student. We know that daily attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of school success and on-time graduation. Our goal is to have every student at school on time, every day.
State law for mandatory attendance, called the Becca Bill, requires children from age 8 to 17 to attend a public school, private school or a district-approved home school program. Children who are 6 or 7 years old are not required to be enrolled in school. However, if parents enroll their 6 or 7 year old, the student must attend full time. And, school districts are required, under RCW 28.225.020 and RCW 28A.225.030 to take a series of actions when students accrue absences.
Also by law, we notify parents/guardians when their student is absent. If a student reaches a certain number of unexcused absences the school will contact parents/guardians to create a plan to support good attendance. Find information about excuse and unexcused absences, tardies and attendance procedures in the district’s Student & Family Information Guide and Policy 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences.
Proposition 1: K-12 Expanded Student Capacity, School Improvement & Safety Upgrades.
Now that school has begun, you’ve likely seen and heard more about the district’s upcoming bond measure on the Nov. 5 ballot — Proposition 1: K-12 Expanded Student Capacity, School Improvement & Safety Upgrades.
If you’re a numbers person, here’s a quick video that conveys the need for the bond in relation to our current overcrowding — 9 of 14 schools are over 100% capacity, and 4 more are over 95% capacity.
The bond package, created by a community advisory committee, has projects that reach every region of the district and will positively impact every school and all students districtwide. For more information about Prop. 1, read the fact sheet and learn about the bond projects. Keep checking sumnersd.org/vote as more information is added.
