A Word From Leadership
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
As we approach the end of semester one, we will have just 11 days left in the semester when we all return back on January 2, 2025. Semester two will officially begin on January 21st.
We’re excited to offer a Lunch and Learn opportunity on January 8th, where scholars can receive academic support from their classroom teachers. Additionally, scholars are encouraged to attend their teachers' office hours during One Lunch on any day before the semester ends.
To help your scholar stay focused during these final days, please consider having them leave their cellphones at home. This will minimize distractions and reduce any anxiety about notifications.
Lastly, seniors should mark their calendars for a class meeting on January 9, 2025, where we will discuss important updates regarding graduation, the significance/importance of attendance and being on time to classes, and credit recovery.
Wishing everyone a joyful holiday season and a wonderful start to the new year!

Extended Day – Credit Recovery
If you are a sophomore who is 16 years old or a junior or senior and need credit recovery, please schedule an appointment to see your dean. Credit recovery is offered at the high school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Credit recovery is required for any student who fails a required course for graduation.
If you are currently enrolled in credit recovery, please continue attending on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The deadline to complete credit recovery is in mid-May. Attendance for credit recovery is not optional; it is required.
Course Changes for 2nd semester
When the second semester starts in mid-January, it will be difficult to make schedule changes. Please keep the following guidelines in mind when thinking about schedule changes.
Deans will make schedule changes for the following reasons:
- The student does not have the prerequisite(s)
- The student failed the class
- There is an obvious error (two classes at the same time)
- To add a class that is needed to graduate
- The schedule is unbalanced
Schedule changes will not be made for:
- Request a specific teacher
- Request a specific semester
- Change lunch periods
- Have a class with a friend
- Leave to attend non-school sanctioned occupational activity
You might also notice a slight change in your students' schedule since the beginning of the year. We do, at times, move student schedules to balance class size within a semester and between semesters. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
ACT Exams
The ACT will be offered for free in April for all students in 11th grade.
The PreACT will be offered for free in April for all students in 10th grade.
Students are always welcome to take the ACT outside of the assigned district testing day. The ACT test does have a fee ranging from $60-80. Fee waivers are available in the SSS office for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Please see your dean with questions.
Upcoming ACT tests/registration deadlines:
Test: February 8 Deadline: January 3
Test: April 5 Deadline: February 28
ACT Test Information for juniors and seniors:
Fridley High School recommends that all students take the ACT during their junior year and retake it if students want to improve their scores

Hispanic Family Liaison
FHS Welcomes Mr. Carlos Villagomez!
I’m excited to start my role as the Hispanic Family Liaison for our school. I’m looking forward to meeting you all and collaborating with you to improve the engagement of our Spanish families with our school. I have already met a few of our Spanish speaking students while visiting and participating in the classrooms. I’m eager to learn more about the students and how we can help them achieve their goals.
A little about me… I enjoy all sports, but Futbol (soccer) tops the list. I played and coached the game, but unfortunately, the years have forced me to watch the sport from the sofa. My two favorite TV series are Game of Thrones and Ted Lasso. I enjoy traveling with my wife and four children. My three boys are in college, and our only girl just celebrated her quinceanera.

If you have any questions about ACCESS testing, please check out the MLD website (https://sites.google.com/isd14.org/mld) or please reach out to Wes Nemenz or Keri Hinnenkamp.

NO Cell Phones
Why don’t we allow cell phones in classrooms during the school day?
We prioritize real human interaction. We believe that learning the skills of in-person communication and collaboration are much more important. Students are already good at using electronics -- they do not need social media practice or gaming practice at school. One of the most important skills our students will learn at Fridley High School is how to get along and work well, face-to-face, with a variety of people.
Electronics are disruptive. Cell phones ringing and buzzing disrupt both the student and the class. We want students focused on the lesson, not who’s calling or texting them.
They cause drama. Students tend to say things online that they would never say out loud. We don’t need extra drama at school.
They get lost and stolen. Unfortunately, as wonderful as our FHS students are, phones are lost and stolen. While we try to help students problem-solve, the school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Students don’t need them. Every student at Fridley High School is given a chromebook for academic use.
