SMS Weekly Update
May 24, 2024
Life at SMS
This week, SMS celebrates the 100 Book Club Challenge participants. Students and staff were challenged at the beginning of the school year to read as close to 100 books as possible (about 2 books per week). This past week during FLEX, any student who participated was given the opportunity to share their reading success. Students who read 100+ books were given a wood medallion made by a student in Archer Industries and three brand-new books of their choosing. Any student who read 50+ books received a new book too. Congratulations to everyone who participated!

Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey - Week of June 3-7
In an ongoing effort to seek feedback and input about the school experiences of Oregon students, the Oregon Department of Education is conducting the Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey for students grades 3-11. This information will help ODE to develop appropriate resources and supports for districts in Oregon. The survey asks students about their access to learning resources, learning opportunities, self-efficacy beliefs, and sense of belonging. Grades 6-11 also include questions about career-technical education and extra-curricular engagement.
Oregon law (House Bill 2656) requires each school district to make the SEED Survey available to students in grades 3-11. Our school will provide the SEED Survey to our students the week of June 3-7. Parents or guardians may decline, either verbally or in writing, to have their student participate in the SEED Survey. For more details about the SEED Survey or to access the parent/guardian opt-out form, please see the links below from the Oregon Department of Education.
ParentSquare Communication and Alert Testing - June 4
As you know, in March our district began using the ParentSquare platform to deliver Trimester 2 electronic report cards via a secure link. We are excited to announce that this summer, we will be moving all district and school communications to the ParentSquare platform! Some of the benefits of moving our communications to this platform include:
All district and school communications archived for you on a single dashboard or app
More languages options available for translation
Event calendars integrated into your dashboard/app
Faster delivery of emergency or urgent notifications
Our district will be conducting a test of ParentSquare communications and alerts on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. This will provide all parents/guardians with an opportunity to see what these communications will look like through your dashboard or app, as well to check your notification preference settings before our full conversion to ParentSquare this summer. On June 4, our District Office will send test-only versions of email, text message, and emergency alerts through ParentSquare to all families as part of this test.
If you have not yet activated your ParentSquare account, you will receive an updated invitation link sometime next week. Need help activating your account? Follow the simple instructions included below.
If you have not yet set up your notification preferences in ParentSquare, please do so before June 4. ParentSquare settings are available when logged in via web browser and mobile app. To access via web browser, visit https://www.parentsquare.com/signin

Last Day to Submit Volunteer Background Checks - June 5
The last day to submit background checks for volunteering during this school year is June 5th. If you have not completed a background check with our district this year and are planning to volunteer for an end-of-year event, please submit your background check form ASAP to ensure the check will be completed in time. Please note that submissions take 7-10 business days to process. The submission form for our background check process can be found here.
On-campus volunteers and field trips require a background check. Audience members for 8th grade promotion or performance events do not require a background check.
Planning to volunteer next year? Volunteer background checks for the 2024-25 school year will reopen on July 1, 2024. Please watch for an email from our District Office in July with more details.
