National Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competition
This week Bowen Steffert competed at the National Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competition held at Spark Arena in Auckland. He competed in the Senior English section against 14 other district winners across New Zealand. He performed his prepared speech titled 'Kotahitanga - Pull With Me' on Tuesday and then later in the evening an impromptu speech on the Importance of Living Life, rather than Live Streaming it. He was supported on stage by our awesome kapa haka boys. Our students back at school were able to watch Bowen perform on the livestream during school time on Tuesday. The tautoko shown by the school community for Bowen has been amazing and appreciated. A big thank you to Mr Summerfield, Mrs Ormsby, Mr Te Huia, Mr Hurae and Mr Wilson for supporting our boys in Auckland and making this incredible opportunity happen. Well done to Bowen for representing our kura on a National stage, and making us all very proud!

Dissection of a Cow's Eye
Mr Miller's class of budding future surgeons were able to disect a cow's eye. This interesting activity allows students to participate in a dissection while at the same time teaching them the anatomy and structure of an eye.
From the Careers Department
William Benson - Olympian 2008, Head Boy 2005, Dux 2005
Year 13 students had the privilege this week to listen to William who was Dux and Head Boy at Hastings Boys' High School in 2005 talk about his achievements in and out of school.
William reflected on his school days and shared how balancing his intense swimming training with his academic ambitions shaped his strong work ethic in the classroom.
William shared stories from his remarkable experience at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he competed as part of New Zealand’s 4 x 100m relay team. He also recounted witnessing historic moments, including watching American swimmer Michael Phelps claim an unprecedented eight gold medals and seeing Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt set a new world record in the 100m event.
Now working full-time as a swimming coach at Hastings Sports Park, William expressed how much he enjoys his career and the fulfilment he finds in coaching the next generation of athletes.

School's 75th Jubliee
Thanks to Old Boy Mike Wilson for bringing in a very special item that documents part of our history and will be carefully stored in our archives. The centre-spread of the School's 75th Jubliee documented in The HB Herald-Tribune on Saturday, October 20, 1979. Below is an article from that publication and we will share more in future newsletters.
