March 2024
Principal Message
Thank you to all the families who participated in our February Family Conferences. It's always a pleasure to share the growth of your students in the classroom. We appreciate your ongoing collaboration in your child's education!
Looking ahead, our fifth-grade students are gearing up for an exciting visit to Mountainside Middle School, exploring the school environment and discovering the array of class offerings.
Additionally, we are set to celebrate our classified staff, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of our office staff, para-educators, custodians, cooks, and nurses. Their dedication to the Meadow Ridge community is truly appreciated!

Happy Dr. Seuss Day!!!
I'm so excited for March. Even though my kids say this is "fake spring", I can feel it in the air. I've been enjoying going in and teaching friendship lessons to our T-K, Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grade classes. I'll transition to teaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in April. All of your kids should be able to show you different breathing techniques they've learned that help calm their bodies and minds so they are ready to learn. If you ask them to tell you about buddies and bears, they should be able to answer the following questions:
What's the difference between someone who acts like a buddy or someone who acts like a bear? (Buddies share, take turns, use kind words, have good control of their bodies, help others, etc. People having bear moments might yell, boss their friends, break crayons, argue during a game, push someone in line, etc)
Who has more friends and more fun in school? (Kids who act like buddies)
Who controls whether I act like a buddy or a bear? (I do)
What do we do if we see someone having a "bear" moment? (Give them space)
How can I reset if I'm in a bear mood at school? (Talk to a grownup about my feelings, take a lap in the hallway, get a drink of water, try deep breathing, splash cold water on my face, ask if I can color or read for a few minutes....all of these are good ideas at school.)
Talk to your kids about ways to reset at home. We all have "bear" moments from time to time. It's important to reset, apologize if needed (say and show you're sorry), and move on. As grown ups, we can model this behavior. Perfection is not the goal. Learning from our mistakes and repairing relationships that have been injured is where we will grow, whether it's springtime or not.
We can do hard things. And we're better together.
Happy Spring!

Nurse's News
March 2024
Spring is around the corner and without a doubt, kids will be eager to hop on their scooters and bikes. This is a great time to remind kids to wear their helmets as they dust off their spring gear. This CDC website has helmet fact sheets for different sports/activities. Here is also a good website from the United States Department of Transportation on bicycle safety tips for parents and kids.
This March our 4th graders will hear from the Providence Head Injury Prevention Program and learn about head injury prevention/safety and get a free helmet. We are excited to have them at the end of the month.
As always, please continue to encourage good handwashing and if your child has had fever, diarrhea, vomiting please make sure all symptoms have resolved for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication) before your child returns to school. HERE is a quick review of our illness guidelines.
Wishing everyone a safe and healthy March,
Allison Cowart BSN, RN
