AMHS Weekly Update

The 13.5-week progress reports will be available to parents and students in Infinite Campus on Friday, November 17th. Please be sure to review your student's grades. Progress reports provide parents and students with the student's academic progress in a course every 4.5 weeks during a semester. The grades on a progress report are not a part of the student's permanent record or transcript but should help students gauge their performance in a course. Student grades are finalized at the end of each semester and are posted to the official transcript at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters. Therefore, it is imperative that students are aware of their grades in a course and that they take advantage of any remediation opportunity that the teacher has provided.

As a reminder, Career Pathway students must earn a 2.5-semester G.P.A., and Magnet students must earn a 3.0-semester G.P.A. to maintain satisfactory academic standing. Students falling below this G.P.A. requirement at the end of the Fall 2023 semester are in jeopardy of being placed on academic probation or being exited from the academic program. Please encourage your child to calculate their current G.P.A. using the instructions below. Please speak to your child about their current status in their courses and contact your student’s teacher if you have any questions regarding their progress in a course.

November is Georgia Apply to College (GAC) Month! The goal of Georgia Apply to College (GAC) is to provide all Georgia high school seniors with the opportunity to apply to college with a focus on providing assistance to first-generation and underrepresented students as they navigate the college application process. Parents and guardians,

Keep up with your students' assignments, schedules, and class announcements in Canvas, the learning management system adopted by DCSD and used by AMHS teachers. There are two steps to set up observer access to your student's Canvas account:

• Look up the pairing code in your student's Canvas account. CLICK HERE for instructions on looking up the pairing code.
• Use the pairing code to set up your parent Canvas account. CLICK HERE for instruction on setting up the account.

This will help you to view your student's course material and help them to meet deadlines.

Parents and students as we begin our 23-24 basketball season, I would like to remind you that tickets will be sold through GoFan for our basketball competitions. We encourage you to purchase your tickets prior to the competition to avoid delayed entry. We will also be following DeKalb County School District's Clear Bag Policy at all competitions. Everyone benefits when parents and families are involved in their children’s education. Not only do students do better in school, but parents feel more connected, as well. The Department of Family & Community Empowerment offers programs and services for students to improve their academic achievement. Please visit the DCSD's Parent & Family Engagement Site to complete the volunteer training. Once you have completed your training, please provide a copy of your competition certificate to Ms. Ham in the counseling center.

Parent involvement has been the key to the continued success of the students at Arabia Mountain High School. Each year Arabia Mountain High School parents/guardians must complete 10 hours of volunteer service hours each year to maintain enrollment at AMHS. Parents can volunteer at the school or school events to earn their volunteer hours or provide donations of $105.00 ($10.50 = 1 volunteer hour).

It is the responsibility of the coach/sponsor of the organization to provide the list of their parent volunteers and hours to Ms. Ham at the conclusion season or event. Parents need to be sure they are signing in at all events to ensure an accurate account of their volunteer hours. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to announce its annual International High School Essay Contest. The Contest is open to all college-bound, high school seniors who submit an essay application through a Chapter of the Fraternity.

The essay must be original and neither previously published nor secured by copyright. The essay must be between 700 and 750 words in length. The type-written, double-spaced essay may be submitted via postal service or email in Microsoft Word.
