Parents, please check in on your students grades, as we are now entering week 6 and about 1/3 the way through the semester. Operation ELEVATE
The Steilacoom Historical School District is thrilled to announce "Operation ELEVATE," a recent $1.5 million grant received from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) over the course of five years. DoDEA grants aim to enhance educational outcomes, reduce achievement gaps, and offer academic programs for districts with a high number of military-connected students.
Operation ELEVATE's primary goal is to address the challenges that students face in achieving literacy growth, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic. The plan involves implementing a sustainable system of effective classroom instruction that aligns with collective teacher efficacy conditions. Furthermore, Operation ELEVATE will focus on evidence-based early literacy enhancements in K-5 classrooms.
Recognizing the pandemic's disproportionate impact on early learners' literacy skills, the grant will establish after-school Literacy Labs at K-5 military-connected schools. Another significant objective of the grant is to ensure consistency in English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum from K-12. This involves implementing a uniform curriculum aligned with state standards and evidence-based practices/programs under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The 2023-2024 school year will primarily be a planning year for these initiatives.
Steilacoom Historical School District is one of 19 school districts supporting Army installations that received a total of $29,250,000 to support military connected students. This is the district’s 5th DoDEA grant award.
National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month and was founded in the United States in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.
This year, our district will be joining participants nationwide by recognizing Unity Day on October 18, 2023. On this day, our school community is encouraged to wear Orange to unite
for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to send a visible message that no child should ever
experience bullying.
Student Assistance Program
We are pleased to announce that Steilacoom High School now offers a Student Assistance Program to support the behavioral health needs of our students. Our Behavioral Health Assistant provides information, guidance and support to students who are impacted by emotional stressors and behavioral health challenges.
The goals of the program include:
- Improve access to behavioral health services
- Increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental distress and encourage help-seeking behavior
- Develop healthy coping skills
- Improve school performance
Sarah Menard is the Behavioral Health Assistant assigned to Steilacoom High School. Sarah will be meeting with students individually, in small groups and will also be providing presentations on behavioral health topics. She will be on campus daily from 7:00am - 3:00pm and is located in office 122.
Please feel free to contact Sarah at smenard@steilacoom.k12.wa.us if you have any questions about the program.

November 7th Capital Levy Proposal
Next month, ballots will begin arriving in homes and voters in the Steilacoom Historical School District will get to decide whether to support a new capital projects levy. The levy is a substantially smaller list of projects and a lower dollar amount than the bond proposal that ran earlier this year. The levy includes:
- A new heating and ventilation system for Cherrydale and Chloe Clark
- Replacement of heating and ventilation system controls in other schools
- A new roof and other exterior improvements to prevent leaking at Steilacoom High School
- Technology system improvements districtwide
- District property
- Replacement of the high school turf field
- Traffic revisions at Cherrydale, Chloe Clark, and Saltar's Point
- Districtwide lighting and security system improvement
If the levy doesn't pass with 50% voter approval, funding will not be available for any of these critical projects.
This is a short-term levy (two years) with a tax rate that is lower than the current bond tax rate that is going away. The 2023 bond rate was $1.63 and the new levy rate that would replace it if approved would be $1.09 in 2024.
While these projects are completed, the district will re-engage with the community about larger needs that could be included in a future bond issue.
You are encouraged to get more information about the levy - on our website at https://www.steilacoom.k12.wa.us/who-we-are/departments/financial-services/shsd-2023-levy-information.
The district will hold informational webinars about the levy proposal on October 17 and November 1.
