The Primary Connection
October 18, 2024
Notes from the Office
We are so grateful to all the grandparents and special guests who made Grandparents Day at Edwardsburg Primary such a memorable event! Your presence brought joy to our students and helped strengthen the bond between generations. Thank you for spending time with us and for your ongoing support of our school community. We were quite surprised by the number of family members who attended. We had over 600 family members join us and we are already making plans to improve it next year.
It is hard to believe, but our first marking period of school is quickly coming to an end on November 1st. We will hold conferences the first full week in November and sign-ups for conference spots will begin on Monday, October 21st. We strive to meet with 100% of our parents/guardians. Conferences are a great time to learn about your child's growth during the first marking period of school. We look forward to having every child represented during the week.

Safe Schools Week
In the coming week, we are proud to recognize Safe Schools Week, a time dedicated to promoting safety and security in our school community. Our goal is to ensure that every student feels safe, supported, and valued while at school. Throughout the week, we will be engaging in activities and discussions that emphasize the importance of a positive school climate, bully prevention, emergency preparedness, and fostering a respectful environment. Together, we can create a space where students can learn and grow without fear, and we encourage families to join us in reinforcing these values at home.
During this week, we will be reviewing OKAY2SAY with all of our students, as well as introducing ALICE. ALICE is a standard response approach that stands for ALERT, LOCKDOWN, INFORM, COUNTER and EVACUATE. Topics will be discussed in developmentally appropriate ways.
If you have any questions or concerns about National Safe Schools Week please reach out to our Director of Student Support Services, Mrs. Ashley Stein at 269-663-1040 ext. 4209 or email at astein@goeddies.com.
Halloween/Fall Parties
Edwardsburg has a long standing custom of not having Halloween parties. This year, the K-3 buildings are going to try to have costume parties. However, we are placing some pretty strict guidelines on costumes for two reasons: 1) we need to protect the innocence of our young students and 2) what might not be scary for some students, may be terrifying for others.
Party information will come from individual classrooms.
When picking out a costume for your child, please follow the following guidelines:
- All costumes are to be appropriate for school and should not be offensive in design or intent.
- Costumes cannot feature inappropriate themes or characters or reference drugs/alcohol etc.
- Props including plastic swords, guns, wands, bows, arrows, etc. are not permitted. If brought to school, these items will be held in the office until a parent/guardian can pick them up.
- Please avoid costumes that are overly scary, including any variance of a clown costume.
- Face painting and hair coloring should be done at home.
- No "blood"
We would really like this to be a fun event for our students, so please help us make it fun for everyone by adhering to our costume requests.
Conflict, Rude, Mean, Bullying
As our Kindergarten and 1st Grade students are learning the expectations of the school year, there are often conflicts that occur, especially on the playground. Rarely are these conflicts bullying, but bullying has become the catch phrase in our society that is often used. We are working with our students to teach them skills that will be used to resolve their issues.
For your information as a parent, I have a matrix that defines the difference between conflict, rude, mean and bullying behaviors.
