Rio Norte News - January 17, 2025
A Note From the Principal
Good Morning River Hawk Families,
Our students did a great job with our active lockdown drill this morning and we're very proud of how quickly they made it into safe, secured areas! We appreciate our River Hawks for taking this drill so seriously.
Parents we need your help getting our River Hawks to school on-time and talking to your student about the importance of arriving to all of their classes on-time every day. We've seen a much larger number of first period tardies this week and have had pockets of student groups "walking" friends to class and then being late to their own class, or just straggling to class with friends. Tardies disrupt the beginning of class and interrupt teacher instructions and/or routines. Students having more than 5 tardies will receive lunch detention and 5 demerits. 10 tardies or more will receive further consequences and 10 demerits. Demerits add up and when students reach 30 or more they lose privileges such as: attending dances, field trips, and special activities (inc. 8th grade activities at the end of the year). Please talk to your student about your expectations regarding their timeliness to both school and class each and every day.
Finally, this week I spoke to our River Hawks about the power of kindness in uplifting another person's bad day. We want to thank all of our families who donated gift cards for The New Way and appreciate those who have signed up to help Saturday or Sunday. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I asked our River Hawks to spend some time this weekend reflecting on their kindness toward others and reminded them that participating in acts of kindness can make their day brighter, too. I hope each of us can find a moment this weekend to do something genuinely kind.

Detentions for No ID Card
This week we did not hold students in the MPR before school if they didn't have their ID card, as we knew many would forget after the break. Sadly many of our chronic offenders who suddenly found their ID cards before break so they didn't have to stay in the MPR are already not bringing their ID cards again. As this is far more than a handful of students, we wanted to make parents aware that students chronically not bringing the card and/or caught pretending to sign-in, but aren't actually signing in, will start receiving detention. We appreciate your support in ensuring your student has their ID card every day.
Valentine Grams On Sale Soon!
Valentine Grams will go on sale on January 27th through Feb 12th. The cost is $2 each and we can accept cash only. Each Valentine gram will include an artificial rose and a heart shaped sucker. Sales will take place on the outdoor stage during lunch and will be delivered by ASB students during advisory on Feb. 13th. To avoid long lines, purchase early at lunch on the outdoor stage!
Winter Dance and Dress Code
Winter Semi-Formal Tickets:
Tickets have been on-sale all week and starting Tuesday, the price increases to $30. See details in the flyer above and note tickets for this dance will NOT be on the webstore. DINNER will be served at this special dance. Student's tickets will be automatically loaded to their ID card, so they need that to buy the ticket, enter the dance, and get their food. GROOVE PACK students MUST go to the ASB window to RSVP and have their tickets loaded to their ID card. All of this will help us ensure food for every individual that attends. Due to food count, students MUST purchase by January 28th.
