Better Speech and Hearing Month
May is Better Speech & Hearing Month!
Each May, we come together to recognize Better Speech & Hearing Month, a time to raise awareness about communication disorders and celebrate the vital work of our speech-language pathologists and SLP-Assistants.
In our special education community, communication is at the heart of connection, learning, and growth. Whether it's developing speech and language skills, or supporting alternative communication methods, our team is here to support every child’s unique voice.
Something that's becoming increasingly important: the impact of technology on early communicators.
In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere. While technology can offer benefits when used intentionally, research and experience continue to show that excessive screen time can interfere with early speech and language development—especially in young children and those with communication challenges.
Here’s What We’re Seeing:
· Less Face-to-Face Interaction: Children learn to communicate by watching faces, hearing voices, and engaging in real-time back-and-forth. When screen time replaces these moments, opportunities for language growth are missed.
· Delayed Speech Milestones: Increased screen use- especially passive viewing- has been linked to delays in expressive and receptive language skills.
· Reduced Social Engagement: Young children need real-life social experiences to learn the nuances of conversation, body language, and empathy.
How You Can Help at Home:
· Make screen-free zones during meals, car rides, and bedtime to create more chances for conversation.
· Choose interactive play over passive entertainment—blocks, books, pretend play, and music are fantastic!
· Give your child your full attention during conversations, even if their words are limited.
· Pause and wait after asking a question- some children need more time to respond, and your patience teaches them their voice matters.
Our speech-language team is always available to talk about your child’s development, share ideas for tech-free activities, and help you find the right balance at home.
Let’s continue to create a world where every child is heard, every voice is valued, and communication is celebrated- in every form it takes.
