Message from the Principal
It was great to see so many of you at SMS Curriculum Night! We know its going to be a great year!
Highlights-
Arrival at SMS - Doors open at 7:30 AM and students are marked tardy if they arrive after 7:40 AM. Please make sure that you are stopping at all STOP signs and driving slowly.
Attendance Matters at SMS - It is really important that all students come to school everyday. We do understand that students may get sick occasionally but excessive absences cause disruptions in a student's education.
Upcoming FTC Events - Room Party Planning on 9/16, and McTeacher Night on 9/24.
FTC Spiritwear SALE- Check out the latest Salt Creek Vikings Spiritwear! Store order deadline is September 25th and no orders will be accepted after that date.
Positivity Project - The week's upcoming character traits and family letters are linked.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Karen Marino
SCHOOL IS IN SESSION - SLOW DOWN! Citations will be issued!
It has come to our attention that an increasing number of drivers are speeding through our district's residential areas, particularly during morning drop-off times. Last week, there was even a special meeting concerning Oakbrook Terrace traffic patterns. School is back in session, and with it comes additional school traffic and parents rushing to drive their children to school. Please SLOW DOWN and come to a complete stop throughout Oakbrook Terrace and all of our neighborhoods. Speeding and not adhering to stop signs pose a significant safety risk to our children and community members.
As a reminder, all three of our schools are located in residential neighborhoods. Please strictly adhere to posted speed limits and come to a complete stop at all stop signs. Your cooperation is extremely important in ensuring the safety of our students and community.
Please be aware that citations will be issued for any violations of traffic laws within each of our communities.
Let's work together to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
For more information, please visit the National Safety Council's website.
Safety Day
Safety Day
On Friday, September 13, all three of our schools will had their annual Safety Day. On Friday, we went through all of our required drills with students so they feel comfortable should a future emergency arise. These drills include:
- Evacuation Drill (fire drill)
- Bus Evacuation Drill
- Law Enforcement Drill (lockdown)
- Severe Weather and Shelter-In-Place Drill (tornado)
If you have any questions about the drills, please do not hesitate to contact your building principal.
Oakbrook Terrace Mandala Signs Sponsored by Dennis Greco
Mandala Design
The students are at it again with creating a collaborative piece of artwork for the banner that is hung up on the light posts in front of SMS school. This is sponsored by the Oakbrook Terrace Alderman, Dennis Greco.
Each student created a mandala design in art class at Swartz school. In every culture, the circle is a symbol of unity, connection, inclusiveness, and continuity. Within each circle some of the students wrote an encouraging message of positive quotes, like "you are awesome", "U R Great", "be happy" etc. As we continually raise our awareness of that connection, we keep our focus on our commonalities, our common humanity and hopefully our desire for good for all. Past banners are raffled off to students after the new one is displayed. We have an AMAZING group of students at Stella May Swartz School!
Join Our Community Book Study!
Many of you have heard about our community book study at curriculum night. This is not just for students old enough to have a phone, this is for parents/grandparents of all ages.Click here to RSVP
Parent Reminders
Update Information
It is important that parents keep their information updated in Skyward. If there is an emergency we do not want to have the wrong information. Please contact the proper school your student attends and give them any new information that needs to be changed whether it be for yourself, your spouse, another parent from a different address (we can separate addresses when student's are split between households),update new or old emergency contacts and any phone numbers for anyone on your Skyward parent portal. It is your responsibility to keep us informed. Salt Creek 630-832-6122, Stella May Swartz 630-834-9256 and Albright 630-279-6160.
Call the ABSENTEE LINE when your child is absent ☎️
Please make sure to call the Stella May Swartz Absentee line at 630-834-9256, press 2 if your child will be absent or arriving late. The school office will retrieve these messages every morning. If you have any doctor's notes, please send those with your student for the nurse's office.
*** You must leave a detailed reason of the absence.
A valid cause for absence includes illness (including mental or behavioral health of the student), observance of a religious holiday, death in the immediate family, family emergency, other situations beyond the control of the student. Remember if you do not call your student in on the day they are absent with a reason, they will be considered an Unexcused absence.
Student Drop Off & Pick Up Procedures
Please follow the guidelines below to keep drop off/pick up running smoothly.
- Pull up as far as you can to allow multiple cars to unload at one time. Cones will be out for the last few parking spaces to help with this.
- Stay in single line (no double rows).
- Use Monterey to proceed to the line. Do not turn down Elder and turn around in a resident's driveway.
- Drive the speed limit when driving on Monterey and any streets around the school.
- Do not park on the east side of the building. This can be very dangerous, it blocks traffic and slows down the line.
- Do not wait and watch your child enter the building. If you need to watch your child enter the building, please park on the west side of the building and walk your child to the front entrance. We have a supervisor on duty from 7:30-7:40 am.
Just A Reminder From The Nurse

The health exam must be dated within one year prior to the first day of school. Transfer students who are not new to Illinois should provide their child's most recent physical. Please contact your child’s health care provider and/or school health office with any questions.
