1st Grade Newsletter
April 13 - 17
**** NEW***
We have included a checklist for the week (pdf just below this section) to help parents and kids organize each day. The items highlighted in it are the ones that need to be uploaded to Seesaw. Everything is still detailed in the plans below.
*Please remember, any paper is fine for activities that require writing. You do not have to print.
*Please also keep in mind that 1st graders will need their day broken into chunks. We do not expect any first grader to do everything for one day in one sitting!
* If you want/need extra work for your child, please see the sections labeled "Extra..." at the bottom.
Monday
Watch the video below to learn about thinking like a mathematician to solve some subtraction facts.
Phonics/ Reading/ Writing
- Watch the videos below. The first video introduces r-controlled vowels. We will learn all of them over the next 3 weeks, but our focus this week is ar. Read the book, Gram's Farm. (pdf below) - point out all of the "ar" words you find.
- Complete 20 minutes of Raz Kids.
- Brainstorm your own story. Complete the star organizer (or use any piece of paper) to record your ideas for your story (pdf below). Remember: stories have a problem and solution. The "What?" on the organizer should be the problem in your story. Hold on the organizer to use tomorrow.
Watch the video below to learn about the desert and how plants and animals depend on each other. Pay close attention, so you can share some things you learned in our class meeting this week!
Tuesday
- Watch the video below to learn about comparison subtraction.
- Complete 20 minutes of Istation Math
- Watch the video below. Play memory (make 2 sets of cards with some of this week's spelling words and the sight words on it and turn them over face down; take turns flipping over 2 at a time to find matches) OR Hide and Hunt (write words on sticky notes and hide around the house; your child will find, read, and record the words found)
- Complete 20 minutes of Istation Reading
- Review your brainstorming for yesterday. Use the organizer to write your own story. You can use any paper for this. Be sure to include a character, setting, problem, and solution in your story! Hold on to this paper until tomorrow.
Wednesday
Math
- Solve the problem in the picture below - use all of the strategies on the sheet: picture, ten frame, number line, and equation (kids can draw and write on any paper to solve). If you need help, go back to yesterday's video.
Phonics/ Reading/ Writing
- Practice sight words - Watch the videos below. Do jumping jacks as you spell each word. Ask your parents for an old piece of mail, newspaper, or magazine. Highlight any sight words you can find on it. Write a sentence using each of this week's sight words. You can use the paper in the pdf below or any paper you have at home.
- Complete 20 minutes of Raz Kids.
- Reread the story you wrote yesterday. Look at the editing checklist (below) and use it to edit your writing. After editing, draw a picture to go along with your story. ***Have someone record you reading your story and submit on SeeSaw***
Thursday
- Write your own COMPARISON SUBTRACTION word problem and solve using a picture and number sentence. (Ex. There were 10 slices of pepperoni pizza and 8 slices of cheese pizza. How many more pepperoni slices were there than cheese?) Don't forget to start sentences with a capital and end with punctuation! ***Post your story problem with the solution on Seesaw.***
- Complete 20 minutes of Istation Math.
Phonics/ Reading/ Writing
- Watch the video below about bossy r. Count how many ar words you see in the video. Practice writing your spelling words with sidewalk chalk, crayons, or markers. Circle the spelling pattern in each word (ar this week). Brainstorm and write other words that have the same spelling pattern.
- Complete 20 minutes of Istation Reading.
- Read Thank You, Mr. Aesop (pdf below). Ask your child the questions on the selection quiz and discuss the answers.
Friday
Review 2-d and 3-d shapes with the videos below. Use the photo below to tell a family member the names of each shape and characteristics of them (ex. number of sides, vertices, faces, edges). (Answers: circle, square, rectangle, hexagon, rhombus, triangle, sphere, cone, rectangular prism, cube, triangular prism, cylinder)
Phonics/ Reading/ Writing
- Complete a spell check - Parents, use the spelling list we will send out on Thursday to assess your child's spelling for the week (any paper is fine). Be sure to call out all 10 words (the 5 given here in the newsletter, plus the 5 new ones included on the list sent Thursday), the sight words, and the 2 sentences. ***Please upload a picture to Seesaw***
- Complete 20 minutes of Raz Kids.
- Watch The Boy Who Cried Wolf. After watching, write your answers to the following questions on a sheet of paper and ***submit on SeeSaw***:
-What was the lesson from this story?
-Does the boy show good citizenship? Why or why not?
