Update from Mrs. Dassing-November 2024
Principal's Message
Principal's Message
Dear Bengal Families,
With our new school calendar for 2024-2025 we will finish our first semester before the Winter Break! While we believe this will allow everyone to wrap things up and truly enjoy a break, it means that exams and other end of semester tasks will be here before we know it!
We had a strong first quarter with academics, arts, and athletics!
- Academically-Our students have attended hundreds of Focus sessions, logged numerous hours in ILT and Bengal Flex to eliminate missing work or get additional assistance. Our first quarter course passage rate was over 97% and over 79% of our students have all A's and B's!
- Artistically-Our Bengal Marching Band has placed in every competition they have participated in and finished strong at the State Championship! Our music groups have had numerous students qualify for region and state and the Fall will see numerous concerts and shows!
- Athletically-We have celebrated our first season in the biggest class of 5A! Our Football, Mens and Women's Volleyball, Cheer, Dance, Mens and Women's Swim, Mens and Women's Cross Country, Men's Golf and Women's Tennis have all had strong seasons and have brought home numerous medals and accolades. Playoffs start soon!
We are looking forward to a great conclusion to Semester 1 and watching our Bengals continue to soar! Thank you for being such an integral part of our Beckham Family. Please let me know if I can assist in any way and don't hesitate to reach out directly at anna_dassing@charleston.k12.sc.us.
Your very proud principal,
Mrs. Dassing

Shannon Doughty
My name is Shannon Doughty, and I am excited to work with the LBHS SIC this school year. I have worked at Lucy Beckham for four years, and it is truly one of my favorite places to work because I see that students are the genuine heart of our work here. Before Beckham, I taught for two years in middle school, five years in a California high school, and spent just over a year teaching in New York. A true coast-to-coast educator, I hope to bring ideas, an open mind, and an open heart to our school and community.
Patty Tate
My name is Dr. Patty Tate, and I serve as the instructional coach at Lucy Beckham High School. With 38 years of experience in education, this is my third year at LBHS. I am committed to fostering an environment where our school and community can celebrate achievements. Through collaboration and support with all stakeholders, I aim to support success for all our students.
Brooke Casperson
My name is Brooke Casperson, and this is my second year teaching at Beckham. I’m thrilled to be a part of the School Improvement Council and look forward to working together to make a positive impact on our school. In addition to teaching, I’m also the assistant varsity girls' basketball coach. After moving to South Carolina from Ohio, I’ve enjoyed becoming part of this wonderful community and am excited to help support the growth and success of our students.
Erin Scheffer
My name is Erin Scheffer and I’m delighted to be serving on the LBHS SIC. I look forward to contributing to initiatives that improve the learning environment, resources, and overall experience for students, teachers, and staff. Being part of meaningful changes for LBHS is a privilege and I’ll do my very best to help ensure student needs, parent concerns, and teacher input are addressed and to be an advocate for improvements that align with the school’s values and direction. I appreciate this opportunity to serve the Lucy Beckham community.
Brantli McMillan
Thank you so much for your trusting me as a representative on the SIC. My husband Ross and I have two sons, Ross and Dalton. Ross, my oldest, is a sophomore at Lucy Beckham. I have lived in Mt Pleasant for over twenty years. I am a graduate of Wofford College and have a BA in English. After college, I worked at the Franke Home in Mt Pleasant as an activities planner for the residents while I waited for my security clearance to become a Special Investigator for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. I worked there for 10 years before becoming a stay at home mom. Serving the community is a passion and honor for me. I received the Jr. League of Charleston Community Impact Award for my service to the community. Making a difference in the lives of people, organizations and schools is one of the greatest ways I can give back. For the past seven years, I have chaired and organized a local holiday market in the community. It was an honor to support local artisans and create a place to bring community together. In my spare time I love to hunt with my boys, play tennis, garden and walk my dogs.
Also, I am the author of a children’s book The Wofford Way. I am excited to share my skills, passion and leadership with Lucy Beckham.
Attendance Matters!
Keep it Under 5!
While we often focus on academics, we would be remiss if we did not underscore the importance of good daily attendance. SC Law has outlined attendance parameters and we follow those in CCSD. We are here to help answer any questions you may have and want to remind you of the following:
All absences require a written explanation from the parent/guardian within three (3) school days of return from the absence. Written explanation of absences must include the student's name, parent/guardian's full name, parent/guardian's signature, date(s) of absence(s), and documentation of the reason for absence(s).
Absences in excess of ten (10) days per year will not be considered excused with a parent/guardian note unless they are accompanied by official medical or legal documentation.
If your student needs to leave school early, we have a process for that too. You can find all this information on our website https://lucybeckham.ccsdschools.com/parentsandstudents/attendance-office

Senior Updates
Individual Graduation Plans have started!
Individual Graduation Plans have started!
The School Counseling Department is excited to have done Senior IGPs and have started 9th grade Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) meetings in the next couple of weeks. Parents should hear from their student's School Counselor soon with instructions on signing up for their IGP meeting through Calendly. Yearly IGP's are required meetings with School Counselors for students and their parents/guardians to discuss future planning. Students will not receive a pass or reminder for their meeting at school so parents should communicate meeting details with their student. Our School Counselors look forward to talking with you soon!
