A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL JOHNSON
Greetings DCP-Redford Parents,
This school year has gotten off to a great start. We are moving in a positive direction and our scholars are constantly improving. Our staff is working hard every day to deliver quality instruction. We are not where we want to be, but we are building something great. We are glad that you are coming along with us on this ride!
We know that we have had our share of concerns with the buses. We continue to work to ensure that your children are picked up, on time and at the assigned stop. Recently, it has come to my attention that there are other concerns regarding the buses that you as parents are voicing. I can say that the chatter that has been going on has not come to my desk in any fashion. We only hear concerns when a particular child has been disciplined for unacceptable conduct on the bus.
Mr. Cunningham and I are always willing to listen to your concerns, via email or phones. This is my official invitation to express your concerns directly to me. Talking about the issues in group chats can only go so far. If you feel that a problem has not been addressed, I sincerely ask you who did you take the problem to? I also ask that engaging conversations on group chats and social media should never involve naming or targeting children, regardless of the alleged offense. That type of negative energy is unwanted and accomplishes nothing.
I am happy to see that the group chats are available for all parents to communicate with each other and share all of their concerns. However, I would be happier if those concerns are brought to either the classroom teacher or the main office. I wish some of you would have raised these concerns at the Open House or the Title One Parent Meeting we had on September 25. I wish I could have heard these voices at our first Parent University Meeting. I want to invite you to our next Parent University, scheduled on Tuesday, October 15 at 9am. In the DCP Redford Library. We will discuss discipline, the most recent NWEA test scores and attendance. (Please note: a volunteer meeting will be held soon for those that completed background checks and want to help around the school.)
You can reach me at Stephen.johnson@dcpschools.org or Mr. Cunningham at latrel.cunningham@dcpschools.org. There will be a virtual town hall meeting to discuss various topics regarding the buses in the very near future. Please be on the lookout for that information. In the meantime, please talk to your children about proper bus behavior and how to work through issues with other children. We also want to be sure that interactions between the bus driver and the riders are proper and respectful as well. Help us to ensure that all of the scholars that are bussed to and from DCP Redford feel safe and secure.
I personally want to thank you for entrusting DCP Redford with your child’s education. My team and I take this responsibility seriously. I know things have not always been pleasant, but we are all works in progress. Only as a united front will we get our children to the next level. I look forward to hearing from you all very soon.
With love,
Principal Johnson

October is Cyber Safety Awareness Month!
Cyber safety education gives scholars the knowledge and skills to stay safe online. It involves acknowledging the benefits and opportunities the online world offers while understanding risks, avoiding potential harms, and protecting one’s well-being.
October is a great time to have a chat with scholars about being safe online, whether at home, at school, or in the community. It’s also a reminder to act as positive leaders and supportive friends in all social spaces, especially online.
CHRONIC ABSENCES AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDANCE
Attendance is extremely important here at DCP-REDFORD. Everyday of school missed is a great deal of information to catch up on for a scholar. Please give your child the best opportunity to be successful and send them to school each day, on time.
Chronic absenteeism is a big problem for most schools. Did you know that if a student has a 90% attendance rate they are considered chronically absent? That means they have missed at least 18 days of school. We must begin to correct this trend for the students here at DCPR. Please help us in our goal of decreasing the number of students that are considered chronically absent.
HOME VISITS
Attendance is a very vital part of our students' growth. As we strive to help our scholars meet their goal, our Attendance Interventionist Mr. Michael Mathis will be out in the field conducting home visits regularly over the coming weeks and months. If you have any questions, you may contact the Main Office at 313-543-3226.
Thank you!
