The U.S. Dept. of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has awarded Jones and six other elementary schools a $1.5 million grant to enhance STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and

Mathematics) instruction!

The schools where the grant will be dispersed include:

• Jones Elementary
• Angier Elementary
• Cabrillo Elementary
• Chesterton Elementary
• Dewey Elementary
• Mason Elementary
• Sessions Elementary

The goal of the Operation QUEST (Questioning, Understanding, Experiencing, Sharing and Thinking) grant is to collaborate with the San Diego Unified STEM Department in engaging students in grades TK-5 in interdisciplinary STEAM curriculum. The approach is to expand and enhance problem-based classroom instruction and student-centered instructional strategies that incorporate hands-on experiences and emphasize the development of social-emotional skills. The DoDEA Operation QUEST grant will create community partnerships, provide tutoring for students, as well as professional development opportunities for teachers.

Through Operation QUEST, our learners will continue to engage in dynamic, hands-on STEAM experiences that not only spark creativity and critical thinking but also strengthen essential social-emotional skills. We believe that when students explore, question, and create together, they develop the tools to thrive in both school and life.

Last December Mrs. Buell traveled to Savanah, Georgia for DoDEA's annual educational grant conference. The collaboration among SDUSD schools, departments, and leaders helped make this grant opportunity possible for our military connected students and thus our entire learning community. As we face financial challenges as a school district and school site, we are so thrilled to know our commitment to Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics and Social Emotional Learning will have the resources to grow and flourish.

Our Parent Teacher Association works with Jones Elementary to provide programs and support to benefit the students, their families, teachers, school administration and the community. Run entirely by volunteers, the PTA raises money to support enrichment programs, program instructors, educational assemblies and field trips, family events, and special classroom supplies.
