Weekly Tips for Parents
Stop a tobacco habit before it starts
According to one survey, teens are most likely to experiment with tobacco products between the ages of 13 and 15. And the fact is that people who start smoking as teens also have a harder time quitting. Discuss the dangers of tobacco use in all its forms (including vaping) with your teen. Explain that once your teen begins, it may not be possible to stop. Don't wait until your teen gets older before discouraging tobacco use. By then, it may be too late.

Talk to your teen about cybersafety
It can be a challenge to keep track of what your teen does online. But it's important to do. Although the digital world can be a great place for learning, it can also be dangerous. Talk to your teen about cyber safety. Make it clear you expect your student to avoid sites or channels with online gambling, pornography or hate content. Remind your teen not to share personal
information. And ask your teen to report unusual or inappropriate material to you. https://tpitip.com/?34jB18608; https://tpitip.com/?44jB18608 (español)
Encourage next-level research
For the best results on big research projects, your teen should go beyond a quick online search. Encourage your student to look for experts and other sources of information that may be cited in news or journal articles. Your teen could even contact a reporter. Many are happy to share information with students. The public affairs offices of universities, government agencies and businesses are also places your teen can find authorities in a variety of subjects to interview.

Community Information
Gwinnett County Public Library
From September 15 to October 15 annually, we recognize the positive impact that Hispanic Americans have had on the country. While it might seem strange that this month of celebration begins mid-way through the month, this is due to seven nations celebrating their independence during the first week of Hispanic Heritage Month. September 15th is the Independence Day of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. September 16 is the Independence Day of Mexico, and September 18 is Chile’s Independence Day.
