Week of May 5, 2024
From the Desk of Our Proud Principal
Good evening, Trojan Families!
This is a message from your proud principal, Mrs. Kinard, and the school leaders at Ferndale Middle School. Please make sure you check-out the digital version of this announcement, which can be found on our school website and social media, for additional important information for you and your students.
Teacher Appreciation Week 2024
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please help us celebrate and recognize our teachers for all their hard work. Parents and guardians, a small note, gift, or gesture is always appreciated by our staff during this week.
We have exactly 24 instructional days before the end of the school year. It is crucial that they are prepared and ready to do their best on these important assessment. Encourage them to ask for help and fully participate so that they can get the most out of these last few weeks of the school year.
Homework and Additional Practice
All year, your student has been working in IXL (an online learning system). In addition, each student also has a specific IXL learning plan designed just for them that helps them work on specific skill and concepts. Each student has access to IXL at school and at home and can work on their indidual skill plan anytime. Student can do IXL on any device with internet connectivity by going to IXL.com.
GCS Transportation
It’s that time of year again! The window for transportation registration opens on April 8. This year, the district is committed to making sure at least 90% of students who need transportation have it on the first day of school. During the 2023/2024 school year, more than 40,000 students applied for transportation services; however, only 29,000 used these services.
KEY INFORMATION
GCS will provide transportation services for eligible students to and from their assigned stop location. The district utilizes six modes of transportation. Factors used to determine which modes will be used include, but are not limited, to program location, student ridership, staff availability, etc.
The transportation window is open from April 8 – May 31.
Families are encouraged to register as soon as possible to ensure their student has transportation on the first day of school.
Families and data managers should only register students who plan to ride.
The Transportation Department will host on-site registration events May 13-18.
Late registration could mean your student does not have transportation on the first day.
You can register by visiting www.gcsnc.com/transportation

PBIS and Class Craft Update - Mr. Russell
As we stride through the final quarter of the academic year, we are excited to continue fostering a culture of excellence and positive behavior at our school. In our ongoing efforts to recognize and reward acts of Trojan PRIDE, teachers will continue issuing ClassCraft points to scholars who exemplify these qualities. These points serve as a currency for participation in various school-wide and classroom incentives, fostering a sense of achievement and motivation among our students.
Moreover, we extend an invitation for you to join ClassCraft if you haven't already done so. By becoming a part of this platform, you can actively participate in acknowledging and rewarding your student's demonstrations of PRIDE, both within and outside of the school environment. Additionally, ClassCraft provides you with the opportunity to monitor your child's behavior, ensuring alignment with our shared values.
To assist you in getting started with ClassCraft, we have prepared a brief instructional video that outlines the process. You can access the videos by clicking on the links below at your convenience.
Thank you for your continued support,

Closing the Gap!
We are 15 school days away from EOGs. We are committed to closing any academic gaps with the time and resources remaining this school year! Students are given multiple opportunities to prepare in every week for every grade level. On Mondays and Fridays- small groups are pulled for ELA extension. Every Tuesday, teachers are pulling a small group to help students become proficient on a weaker standard Those who are not in the small group, are completing a skill review lesson to help strengthen those vital skills and standards required for EOG and ELA success. Every Wednesday and Thursday- ALL students are given an hour of EOG prep/review school wide through our EOG Prep Academy!
Teachers are concluding module 4 this week and shifting into review mode. For the next two and a half weeks, students will receive data driven instruction. We want to ensure that all students have had multiple opportunities to have practice around the power standards, and key skills!
We are confident that our students will show growth and proficiency! Continue to encourage them to read at home, to think positively and to fully engage while at school!
Don't forget, we have afterschool tutorials on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30-6 for ELA , Math and 8th Grade Science. Families must provide transportation. We are providing the teachers, snack and light dinner.
