October is Here!
Happy October!! Can you believe October is here and in full swing!? As we embrace the fall season, we’re excited to share important updates, tips, and resources to support you and your child.
Importance of Routine
This month, we focus on the significance of routines, especially for children with autism. Routines provide structure and predictability, which can enhance your child’s sense of security. Routines provide a structured environment that can help reduce anxiety, promote independence, and improve overall well-being. Here’s a closer look at why routines matter and how they can benefit children with autism.
1. Creating Predictability
For many children with autism, uncertainty can lead to anxiety and distress. Routines create a predictable framework for daily activities, allowing children to anticipate what will happen next. This predictability helps them feel more secure and reduces the likelihood of behavioral challenges.
2. Enhancing Independence
When children are familiar with their routines, they can take more initiative in completing tasks on their own. Knowing what comes next empowers them to navigate their day with greater confidence. For instance, a child might learn to independently get dressed or prepare their backpack when these activities are consistently scheduled.
3. Improving Focus and Attention
A structured environment minimizes distractions. When children know their schedule, they can better focus on the tasks at hand. This enhanced attention can lead to improved learning outcomes and engagement in both educational and social activities.
4. Facilitating Skill Development
Routines provide opportunities for repeated practice of essential skills. Whether it’s brushing teeth, preparing meals, or participating in social activities, having these tasks integrated into a daily routine allows for consistent reinforcement. Over time, this repetition helps solidify skills and promotes mastery.
5. Reducing Behavioral Challenges
Transitions can be particularly challenging for children with autism. Routines help manage these transitions by providing clear expectations. When a child understands what to expect next, it can mitigate frustration and reduce the likelihood of meltdowns or other behavioral issues.
6. Encouraging Social Interaction
Incorporating social activities into a routine can enhance social skills. Regular family meals, playdates, or group activities allow children to practice social interactions in a comfortable setting. These routine interactions can help them develop friendships and improve communication skills.
Tips for Establishing Effective Routines
Visual Schedules: Use visual aids like charts or pictures to outline daily activities. Visual schedules can help children better understand their routines and transitions.
Consistency is Key: Strive for consistency in daily schedules, especially during key routines like bedtime and mealtime. This consistency fosters a sense of security.
Involve Your Child: Encourage your child to participate in creating their routine. This involvement can increase their investment in following the schedule.
Prepare for Changes: When changes to the routine are necessary, prepare your child in advance. Discuss what will happen and when, using visuals or social stories to explain.
Be Flexible: While routines are important, flexibility is also essential. Being adaptable helps children learn to cope with unexpected situations over time.
Conclusion
Routines are a powerful tool for helping children with autism thrive. By providing structure, predictability, and opportunities for skill development, routines create a supportive environment that can lead to greater independence and reduced anxiety. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in establishing and maintaining these routines, fostering a sense of stability and security for their children.

REMINDER: Sick Policy 🤧
As important as Routine is, we continue to prioritize the health and well-being of our community, we want to remind everyone of our sick policy. This policy helps us maintain a safe and healthy environment for all children and staff.
Sick Policy Guidelines:
To prevent the spread of communicable diseases, it is our policy that parents/guardians must notify staff in advance if your child is sick, within four (4) hours of a treatment session, but preferably at least 12 hours of notice when canceling or rescheduling an appointment.
Parents/legal guardians are asked to use the same guidelines used in schools and daycare centers. If a child is too sick to attend school or daycare then he/she is too sick to participate in his/her ABA therapy session.
ABA therapy will resume as soon as the child’s doctor clears him/her of being contagious or the remedy is completed. Parents/guardians must provide documentation of a doctor’s note in order for your child to return to ABA treatment.
Thank You for Your Cooperation!
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our community healthy. If you have any questions about our sick policy or health-related concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
STAY HEALTHY!
