What They Left Behind
This past week, a colleague of mine shared a short reflection online that’s been sitting with me ever since. He wrote, “I never realized both Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Dr. King had their lives taken from them at the age of 39—the same age I am now (for a few more months anyway). That really hit me this morning as I thought about these two heroes of mine and what it might be like at this stage of life to be forced to surrender my own life for the sake of others.”
There was something about that sentence—something about the age, the comparison, the quiet awe of it—that stirred something in me too. It’s easy to admire people like Bonhoeffer and King from a distance, to honor their legacy and quote their words. But when you imagine what it must have felt like to be so young, to know what was at stake, and still choose love and sacrifice—that’s when their faith begins to challenge us more deeply.
Their lives are on my mind this week for another reason too. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed by the Nazis on April 9, 1945. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The anniversaries of their deaths—only five days apart—come around every spring, often right alongside Holy Week. This year, they fall just days before we wave palms and remember another man who gave his life out of love for others.
Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who stood up against the Nazi regime during World War II. After spending time in the United States—studying theology and worshiping in Black churches in Harlem—he returned to Germany, knowing full well the dangers. Despite warnings from friends, he believed he could not help rebuild the church after the war unless he also shared in the suffering of his people during it. He was executed just two weeks before his concentration camp was liberated.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be killed nearly twenty-three years later. Also a pastor. Also a man of faith. Also 39. Both men lived their beliefs not only with bold words but through costly, courageous love. And both believed that following Jesus meant showing up for others, especially when it was hard.
Their stories remind me of Holy Week, which begins this Sunday. It’s the week we remember Jesus entering Jerusalem in humility, gathering with his friends at the table, and walking the path of suffering and love that leads to the cross—and ultimately, to the empty tomb.
Sometimes we think of Holy Week as something that happened to Jesus. But what if we remembered it as something Jesus chose? He chose to show up for the people he loved. He chose to speak truth when it would have been safer to stay silent. He chose the cross. Not because it was easy, but because his love for the world was that deep.
The apostle Paul writes in Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.” That’s the kind of perseverance we see in people like Bonhoeffer and King. It’s the perseverance we see in Jesus himself. And it’s what we’re invited to live out in our own time, in our own way.
So here’s the invitation: show up for Holy Week. Come wave a palm and sing “Hosanna” this Sunday, April 13. Come share communion on Maundy Thursday, April 17, as we remember the night Jesus gave a new commandment—to love one another as he has loved us. And come back again on Easter Sunday, April 20, to celebrate the good news that love and life have the final word.
Even though we won’t gather formally on Good Friday or Holy Saturday, I encourage you to take time in your own way to pause, reflect, and pray. Read the story of Jesus' passion. Sit in the quiet for a few minutes. Consider the depth of his love. These small acts of attention can help prepare our hearts to receive the joy of Easter with deeper gratitude.
We don’t have to be heroes. We don’t have to get everything right. But we can show up with open hearts, and we can be reminded that the story we’re a part of is one of deep love, costly grace, and everlasting hope.
Bonhoeffer and King didn’t just leave behind words—we remember them because they lived their faith with courage. This Holy Week, may we follow their example by living ours with love.
See you in church,
Pastor Adam
This weekend, we invite you to join us for Palm Sunday which marks the beginning of our journey through Holy Week. Our children will lead us into worship with a palm parade, and we’ll have meaningful moments of prayer and music as we reflect on Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and prepare our hearts for Easter. This special service commemorates the day when crowds welcomed Jesus with palm branches and shouts of praise, not knowing how the week would unfold. Come experience this powerful start to the most significant week in the Christian calendar as we walk together toward the cross and the empty tomb.

Bible Reading—Luke 23:26-27
As they led Jesus away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him.
Maundy Thursday, April 17 (7PM & Online)
A powerful service that brings together the Last Supper and the journey to the cross. This Maundy Thursday service guides us through Jesus’ last night with his disciples, his arrest in Gethsemane, his trial, and his crucifixion. Through scripture, song, and prayer, we will experience the depth of Christ’s love shown in both the blessing of communion and the sacrifice of the cross, as we walk with our Lord through these decisive hours that changed the world.

The Fellowship Committee is hosting an Easter Morning Surprise—a delicious spread of sweet and savory treats, fresh fruit, juice, and hot coffee. It’s a great chance to greet old friends, welcome new faces, and share in the joy of resurrection morning together. Bring your appetite, your Easter spirit, and maybe a friend or two! We’ll see you in the Gathering Room before worship begins.
Easter Sunday, April 20 (10:30AM & Online)
Easter morning began with grief. Women carrying spices. A sealed tomb. A reality too painful to face. But then—everything changed. Join us as we hear again the story that changed everything. The story that reminds us that God is always at work, breaking into our losses, our fears, and even our doubts to create something new. Whether you've been away from church for a long time, have never been part of a church, or are simply looking for a place to reflect and rejoice, you are welcome here. Bring your hopes, your questions, and your whole self. Come and see. Come and be part of the story. Come and experience God. We can't wait to celebrate with you.
Special Worship Service of Psalms & Songs—Sunday, Apr 27, 10:30A
Join us for a unique and creative worship service shaped entirely by the book of Psalms, the Bible’s prayer book. Throughout history, the Psalms have guided believers in prayer—expressing joy, sorrow, gratitude, and lament. They remind us that prayer is not about polished words or perfect technique, but about honest conversation with God. In this special service, we will sing the Psalms in a creative way—setting their lyrics to the tunes of familiar hymns. For example, Psalm 96 will be sung to the tune of I Sing the Mighty Power of God. This may be a new experience for some, but don’t worry—the choir will lead the way! Worship leaders James Hamilton (outgoing ruling elder) and Tug Sanner (incoming ruling elder) will guide us through this meaningful time of Scripture, song, and prayer. There will be no 8:15AM worship service on this day—please join us at 10:30AM as we lift our voices in worship!
Pull Up a Chair for a Good Cause: Southern-Themed Fellowship Lunch
Sunday, May 4 | Following Worship | Fellowship Hall
Mark your calendars and bring your appetite! On Sunday, May 4, the Fellowship Committee invites you to stick around after worship for a Southern-Style Fellowship Lunch—featuring pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni & cheese, and plenty more comfort food favorites. But this lunch isn’t just about the good eats. Your generous donations will go toward supporting Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville, North Carolina, as they care for their neighbors recovering from recent flooding and hurricane damage. One way they’re making a difference is through a community garden that provides fresh produce to those in need. Just this March, they harvested 37 pounds of spinach—and they’re now planting cabbage, collards, broccoli, and lettuce. Our support will help provide more plants, tools, and supplies for this meaningful mission. Let’s come together for good food and an even greater purpose. Please sign up today to join us!
The Ordination/Installation of Deacons & Ruling Elders—May 4
Join us on Sunday, May 4, during the 10:30AM worship service as we celebrate the ordination and installation of our newly elected ruling elders and deacons. After a season of preparation and discernment, Brent Baker, Jim Hardwick, Patrick Hughes, and Tug Sanner will be ordained and installed as ruling elders, and Paula DeMart, Charlene Galose, Walt Holokai, and Cheryl Palkovic will be ordained and installed as deacons. This annual service is a meaningful moment in the life of our church as we lay hands on these individuals, asking for God's guidance and blessing as they step into their roles of spiritual leadership. Your presence and prayers are an important part of this sacred occasion—come and show your support as we affirm their calling and commission them to serve!
Celebrate Confirmation Sunday!—May 18
Join us on Sunday, May 18, during the 10:30 AM worship service as we celebrate Confirmation Sunday, a significant milestone in the faith journeys of six of our young people. Lilah, Corey, Aiden, Jenna, Lucy, and Michael have spent time learning, asking questions, growing in their faith, and preparing for this moment. Now, they are ready to stand before our congregation and make their public profession of faith as full members of WPC. This is a joyful day for our church family! As we witness their commitment to Christ and the church, we are reminded of our own faith journeys and the ways we support and encourage one another in discipleship. We hope you will be present to celebrate, pray for, and welcome these students as they take this next step in their lives of faith. See you in church!
