THE FINAL DAY OF ASA WAS MAY 16TH!
Dear Parents/Community,
It's hard to believe we have finished our year of After School Activities. From sports to art to music, your children have thrived in these extracurricular pursuits, showcasing their talents and building lasting friendships. We're immensely proud of their achievements.
While we say goodbye to this year's activities, we eagerly anticipate the adventures next year will bring. Thank you for being part of our community, and here's to more exciting experiences ahead! If your child has an interest in starting a club/activity next year at Southwest please have them reach out during the summer or at the beginning of the school year. We can see what we can get organized.
Wishing you a wonderful summer filled with joy, relaxation, and cherished memories.
Warm regards,
Abby Modaff
Nurses Notes
Parents and Guardians,
Medications at school:
School Health Services protocol requires that all medication kept in the school health office must be picked up by parents or guardians on or before the last day of school, Thursday, May 30, 2024, by 11 am. Any medication not picked up by this time will be destroyed. To ensure the safe return of medication to parents, no medication will be sent home with students in backpacks or on the bus/cab/school transportation. If your student has written authorization on file with the school nurse to self-carry emergency medication such as an inhaler, he/she may transport that medication home. If you are unsure, you may call Nurse Jacobs at 314-415-7329 to see if we have self-carry paperwork for an inhaler and/or EpiPen for your student.
Immunizations:
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to the parents of 7th-grade students who have already sent in their students' immunization records that are needed before those students begin 8th grade. We have moved from needing 275 to now needing 34! I appreciate those who have already sent records in.
If you have not yet sent your student’s record, please send it to Nurse Jacobs. We are working hard to get them all processed before summer break. Remember, most students received the needed vaccines during the 6th grade. So you can send the immunization record from the parent portal; you do not need to wait until their next annual visit. If you must send records to the nurse during the summer break, it will be most efficient to email them to Nurse Jacobs
Seasonal allergies
The St. Louis area region is having a bad year for seasonal allergies. Students with seasonal allergies may experience a runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, nasal congestion, sore throat, and cough. Please encourage your child to wash their hands and face when coming inside after recess, PE, or outside class projects/breaks. This can help to remove irritating pollens. If your child’s symptoms are bothersome or severe please talk with their doctor.

Overdue Library Books sent to Lost
Parents, Please note that library books that have a due date of before April 2024 have been marked lost and a fine assessed in Infinite Campus. Notices are emailed every Monday with overdue books and your child can see which books are checked out, overdue or fined by logging into Destiny Discover through the library website. If your child has the book or books that are marked lost, please have them return them this week to delete the fine or if you cannot locate the book and need to pay the fine, log into Infinite Campus to resolve the fine. If you have any questions please contact Shannon Burger, librarian at sburger@parkwayschools.net.
Yearbook Distribution and Cash & Carry Option
Yearbooks will be distributed on the last day of school, no exceptions. If your child will not be at school on the last day they can pick up their yearbook in June during school hours in the Welcome Center. Also, a limited number of yearbooks will be available on the last day for $30 cash, as well as, autograph books for $5, please pay and receive your yearbook in the main office during yearbook distribution on the last day of school.
St. Louis County Library Representative
A representative from the St. Louis County Library will be at Southwest Middle during all lunches on Tuesday, May 14th. She will be available to sign students up for the SLCL Summer Reading program, discuss new books and she will have fun giveaways. Students will have the opportunity to visit with her during their recess time.
8th Grade End of the Year Events
May 23rd: Eyes on the Prize
- Eyes on the Prize is meant for all 8th graders and their families and guests to celebrate students' successes in middle school. All 8th graders will report to the 8th grade classrooms by 5:30 PM to line up for the procession of students. We recommend that students leave personal items with their families and guests so that they do not have to carry them during the ceremony.
- The recommended dress code for the event includes: pants and a button down or polo shirt, nice shoes, and a belt. Ties or bowties are optional. Another option includes dresses or skirts (Be mindful that you will be walking on the stage above others) with nice shoes that can be walked in easily.
- The 8th grade graduation ceremony will begin promptly with the procession of students at 6 PM.
May 23rd: 8th Grade Dance
- Immediately following the Eyes on the Prize Ceremony, all 8th graders are invited to the 8th grade dance to continue to celebrate with friends. There will be refreshments, a photo booth, and lots of dancing.
May 28th: 8th Grade Softball Tournament & Picnic
- Check your emails for a message that will be sent by Dr. Cavazos-Rochat on the week of April 29th about ordering an 8th grade shirt. All 8th graders who purchase a shirt are invited to wear this at the picnic. The fee for the shirt will also include a hot dog. Students who bring cash with them on the day of the picnic will have the option to purchase Kona Ice.
May 29th: Six Flags Field Trip
- A permission slip has been emailed to parents about attending Six Flags. Students will be leaving Southwest Middle at 9:45 AM and returning back to school by 5:30 PM. Additional information about the day has been included in the email.
Feel free to reach out to Dr. Cavazos-Rochat or Mr. Caltagirone with any additional questions about any of these events.
