Crown Resorts, Packers Promise

Australian casino developers Crown Resorts Ltd. and James Packer (pictured) have decided to donate A$200 million ($187 million) to Australian charities over the next decade through the establishment of a new charitable foundation.

Crown Resorts will contribute A$100 million to the fund, while the Packers will contribute another A$100 million, Australian media reported.

The new National Charitable Fund, to be announced on Tuesday, will contribute an average of A$20 million annually over the next 10 years to a great cause.

According to media reports, the fund will focus on improving education for Indigenous Australians, supporting community welfare programs, and enabling more Australians to make artistic efforts.

Crown Resorts is currently expanding its operations in Australia with the aim of attracting high-cost Asian tourists, and is expanding in Asia through its joint venture Melco Crown Entertainment.

Crown Resorts is bidding for a new casino license in Brisbane, Queensland, and has already received approval to build a new casino resort in Crown Sydney, the largest city in NSW.

His sister Gretel Packer will run a charity fund with former Howard government minister Helen Coonan, chairman of the Crown Resorts Foundation, the Australian Daily Telegraph newspaper reported.

Mr Packer was quoted as saying the donations would go to charities and programs that would be innovative, run well and deliver "sustained social change."

Mr. Packer is co-chairman of the Macau casino operator Melco Crown Entertainment.
