BHS Groundbreaking
"Building Today, Inspiring Tomorrow" became a reality yesterday as BCSD celebrated the groundbreaking of its new high school. The community rallied to mark this transformative project despite the cold and rain. Students, staff, local officials, and community members celebrated this exciting milestone.
Student representatives Emily Woolard and Vishruth Vikram shared their thoughts on how the new building will inspire future generations of Blue Devils. They highlighted that even as the district undergoes physical changes, the commitment to excellence and preparing students for what lies ahead remains unchanged. The occasion had a special touch as elementary students, representing the youngest learners in the district, led the Pledge of Allegiance, emphasizing the project's lasting significance. Adding to the atmosphere, the BMS and BHS Choirs sang the National Anthem, while the Marching Blue Devils performed the Alma Mater and fight song. Special thanks to BMS Choir Director Adam Albright, BHS Choir Director Stephanie Higgins, and BHS Band Director Sam Portzer. Click HERE to see pictures from the groundbreaking.
This milestone represents years of planning and community support, demonstrating that today's efforts are laying the foundation for tomorrow's successes. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission's (OFCC) offer of 39% state funding ($42.6 million) in early 2022 provided the catalyst for this project. The Board of Education, recognizing the opportunity to inspire future generations, pursued this funding, culminating in voter approval of the construction bond in May 2023. Prudent financial management, including a credit upgrade and favorable bond sales, saved taxpayers an estimated $1.5 million in interest, further securing the future.
The project itself—a new high school with a performing arts center, athletic fields, and tennis courts; improvements at Applewood and Kidder Elementary Schools; a new maintenance facility and Board office; and demolition of existing buildings—represents a tangible investment in "Building Today, Inspiring Tomorrow." BCSD is proud to partner with ThenDesign Architecture, Hammond Construction, and the OFCC on the construction of the new high school.
