What A Great First Week!
We’re off to a great start here! As expected, we had a few wrinkles that accompany the start of every school year but we always work together to quickly iron those out: it’s been so good to have all of your kids back! Because relationships yield results and are the foundation to everything we do, this week teachers have been focusing on building a healthy classroom community as we transition from summer days to school days!
Walking/ Biking to School
I hope the “false fall” weather this week has students in the Belmont and Monte Vista neighborhoods itching to walk or ride their bikes to school! Unfortunately our new School Resource Officer does not start until after Labor Day so I’m not comfortable encouraging kids to cross route 33 until we have the unmistakable blue lights of a deputy’s cruiser flashing at the intersection with Erickson. Of course if you’d like to accompany your kids and cross 33 with them, you are always welcome to! I’ll send out an update once Deputy Custer starts.
Transportation
All transportation changes must be made by 2:00pm. Please contact the office at 540-438-1965 or you may send an email to mvesattendance@rockingham.k12.va.us with your change. If you’ve notified your child’s teacher please be sure to notify the office as well.
We’re Hiring!
In my job, I hear memorable quotes almost every day! My favorite from this week was, “Mr. Miller, I thought you were the principal?!?”
Just a few library reminders as we start a new year:
You can view the library catalog at home by visiting our Destiny website here
I have created a video tutorial to review the steps on how to log in to your child's library account from home here
Please let me know if you would like to receive an e-mail notification whenever your child checks out books or if you have any other questions or concerns.
Thank you!

Attendance Policy Update
Prearranged Absences
A written request for a pre-arranged absence must be given to the principal at least fourteen days prior to the planned absence. The school administrator has the discretion to excuse or unexcused the pre-arranged absence request, based on the student’s prior school absences, whether or not the student has a current attendance improvement plan and the academic standing of the student. The student is responsible for securing any and all make-up work from their teachers prior to the pre-arranged absence(s).
Due to varied demands on teachers with respect to preparing and assigning make-up work for pre approved absences, teachers shall have discretion to decide the type and amount of such work and schedule for its completion. Teachers shall not be required to provide assignments in advance of the absences, but may do so at their discretion. Parents/guardians and students are encouraged to work with teachers prior to the absence to develop a plan for doing the assignments either virtually, project-based, packet work, or other“means” agreed upon by the teacher, including expected deadlines. Parents/ guardians and students are expected to access assignments and class materials through the Learning Management System to the extent possible.
Parents are encouraged to consider scheduling vacations around school holidays and breaks.
Attendance
If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the office at 540-438-1965 or email mvesattendance@rockingham.k12.va.us. If you are planning to take a vacation or your child will be out of school for an extended period of time, please contact the office. Thank you!
Fentanyl Education and Awareness Resources
The VDOE and the Virginia Department of Health worked collaboratively to develop information and resources for fentanyl education and awareness (HB 1473). The Fentanyl Awareness informational one-sheet was created through that partnership. School divisions should ensure that all 9-12 graders have this sheet within the first two weeks of the 2024-2025 school year. School divisions can choose distribution methods that best meet the needs of their students and families. Additionally, the webpage includes resources for educators on substance use prevention. Read more from VDOE.
PowerSchool
The parent portal is an online portal accessible anywhere on the web that parents can log in to and see all of their children in one place, their grades, assignments, scores, attendance, schedules, and teacher comments for each school your children attend.
Parents need to contact the school to get access information to create an account in PowerSchool.
