Exemptions are COMING!
Students & Parents,
Norman North students are eligible to earn a STANDARD exemption by meeting following guidelines:
- Student has 5 or fewer parent confirmed absences. No unconfirmed or unexcused absences. (Medically excused absences are not counted.).
- No ISS or OSS Absences
- Student has an A in the class.
- Student has no more than 2 tardies for the specific class where the exemption would be used.
Absences must be parent-confirmed within 5 days of the absences. We will not be correcting OLD ABSENCES.
In order to promote an incentive for attendance, our NNHS Leadership Team added an opportunity for a second BONUS exemption for all students beginning last year. All 9th-12th grade students are eligible for the BONUS Attendance exemption if they meet the following qualifications for the first semester:
- No In-School or Out-of-School Suspensions
- 5 or fewer TOTAL absences per class (ALL absences count except school activity).
- No unconfirmed or unexcused absences.
- 2 or fewer tardies in the specific class where the exemption would be used
- A, B, or C in the specific class where the exemption would be used.
Our belief is that physically attending classes consistently will result in more learning for students even if that learning may not be immediately evident on an assignment. We want to incentivize classroom attendance because students who miss school miss valuable learning opportunities - even if they do the Canvas assignment.
Not everything learned through listening to class lectures, participating in classroom discussions, and other classroom activities can be reduced to a grade on an assignment. Class time is valuable learning time.
While there are many valid reasons that students miss school, this extra BONUS exemption is a reward for those students who are in school on a regular basis - even if their grade is not an A.
Students can pick up an exemption form from the attendance secretaries beginning on Monday, December 9, 2024 before school and at lunch in the main hallway in front of the wolf through Wednesday December 11, 2024. No exemptions will be taking place IN the MAIN OFFICE or FRAC OFFICE. Exemptions must be signed by teachers by end of day December 13, 2024. The only exception to anything above is if a student has a valid absence all 3-5 days. If you want to use your exemption(s), you must meet these deadlines or you automatically forfeit your exemption(s).
FALL FINALS SCHEDULE:
Graduation Gear-Up:
It is time to order your senior graduation products(including caps/gowns). All orders will be placed online this year at Jostens.com. A representative from the company will be on site on October 22nd from 10-1 in the Commons to assist with any questions.
FAFSA:
It is getting close to FAFSA time! US Department of Education hopes to have the FAFSA operational by Dec. 1. However, you can go ahead and set up your FAFSA id now-this has to be done at least 48 hours before you can work on the FAFSA.
You can find information to help with that process, which is now a graduation requirement. The information includes videos, powerpoints and worksheets to help guide you through the process. Some material is in English as well as Spanish.
All information can be found in the 24-25 senior advisory CANVAS tile. Look for the All things graduation module located at the top of the page. You can also find information about college and military visits and scholarship opportunities.
Class of 2025 Graduation Speeches:
Submit a speech to be in consideration as a speaker at graduation by April 28th, 2025. In addition to our senior class president we have 2 student speeches during the graduation ceremony. You will need to be prepared to read your speech in front of the senior class officers, sponsors, and administration on April 29th during 4th hour lunch. A decision will be made shortly after that reading.
Guidelines:
- Speeches should be 2-3 minutes long when read aloud.
- The speeches should be positive in nature and reflective of high school experiences.
- Avoid being too personal: your audience is large and includes parents, grandparents, school staff, and fellow graduates. Consider this is an important moment for everyone
- You may thank parents/teachers/friends etc. but do not name specific individuals.
- Make it unique to the North experience and your genuine feelings on this occasion.
- Do not give a class history or long welcome; these are presented by class president
- You can find previous speech examples by clicking here
- If you have any questions please contact the senior class sponsors Ms. Freihofer (bethf@normanps.org), Mrs. Dettmann (mdettmann@normanps.org) and Ms. Uhlenhake (ritau@normanps.org)

NEW ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS
This year, our attendance expectations are that all absences are confirmed by parents within 5 days of the absence. This will allow us to better monitor students who are truant and it will allow a seamless transition for exemptions. Students will no longer be able to clear absences for exemptions that are outside of the 5 days of the absence.
In order to remind parents and students of this expectation, we have printed magnets (one per household please) that you can place on an appliance or anything metal as a reminder. The magnet contains the phone number of the attendance line and a QR code for an absence form. You can pick up the attendance magnet at Shoppes on Stubbeman (August 3 & 4) or Open House (September 7).
The email of the person using the absence form will be collected upon submission and must match a parent's email address in Infinite Campus. Students MAY NOT excuse themselves with the attendance form.
ATTENDANCE SECRETARIES:
10th-12th grade:
A-G (Student's last name): Eleana Kyle - ekyle@normanps.org
H-P (Student's last name): Lisa Udy - ludy@normanps.org
Q-Z (Student's last name): Ami Parker - amip@normanps.org
NNHS WILL CONTINUE OUR FOCUS ON SCHOOL SAFETY!
All students and staff members will again be required to wear their 24-25 Student ID around their neck or pinned to a shirt if they are INSIDE our buildings. IDs are not allowed to be tied to a backpack because students leave their backpacks and/or IDs end up on a student's back and do not make it easy to identify if the student should be inside our building.
All students will be given 2 IDs in their advisory classes during the first week of school. After these IDs are distributed, any student who arrives at school without an ID will be given lunch detention as a consequence and will be required to purchase an additional ID. Parents are welcome to bring a student's ID to school but the student will not be allowed to travel into the building until the student has the ID. All purchased IDs are $5.00 each and will be charged to the student's account if the student does not have money to pay immediately.
Additionally, all NNHS students will be given an Access Card with their 2 IDs that will enable them to enter the CCC and Commons Entrances between 7:25am-4:15pm. This means that students should NEVER open the door for another student because all NNHS students should have their Access Card with them. A replacement Access Card is $5.00.
Students, we are only as safe as we all work together to be. Giving other students your ID, taking an ID from another student, and now being able to give someone else an Access Card could impact the safety of our students and staff members with severe consequences. If you lose an ID or Access Card, it is your responsibility to notify the main office so your card can be deactivated. School Discipline consequences will take place for students who give an ID or Access Card to any other person or who have another person's ID or Access Card.
