PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Glade Families,
As we move closer to the midpoint of the school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our achievements and express my gratitude for your continued support. Recently, the Glade Leadership Team reviewed our school improvement goals and the mid-year data we have for student learning. We are pleased that our students have been working hard and making strides in their academic endeavors. Teachers have been diligently assessing their progress, and we are proud of the achievements they have accomplished thus far. We know this happens as part of a home-school team and are always appreciative of your supports. If you have any concerns or questions about your child's academic performance, please don't hesitate to reach out to their teacher.
Your child's report card will come home in a little over a week. Taking the time to review your child's report card together with you is not just about academic performance; it is a meaningful investment in their growth, development, and well-being. Your involvement sends a powerful message – that you are actively engaged in their education and committed to their success.
Gladefully,
Steve Raff

Kindness Challenge Week
January 22-26, 2024
FCPS uses this week to emphasize KINDNESS in the school setting. Throughout the week, there will be several activities to learn about and practice kindness. All students will have a special lesson about kindness with Ms. Dattoli in Media and we will build our very own GES Chain of Kindness!
We look forward to watching our Glade Jaguars WORK HARD at BEING KIND! 😊
PTA NEWS
Happy New Year and thank you to our volunteers who help make all these events happen! -The GES PTA Board
Restaurant Spirit Night
Our first PTA Spirit Night of 2024 will be on Monday, January 22 from 4 to 8 pm. Panera now allows us to order in the store, online, or pickup. Delivery is listed, but our local store goes through DoorDash which doesn’t count toward our total. Grab bread for sandwiches, salad for your lunch the next day, bagels for breakfast, or dinner for your family. Glade received 20% of all checks during that time using our code FUND4U.
100th Day of School Food Drive
The PTA is celebrating our 100th day of school with a food drive. Collection of items will be from 8:30-9:30 am outside of the media center on January 31, 31 and February 1. We are aiming high. Our goal is to collect 100 pounds of food for 100 days of school! Please only include shelf stable items, cans, boxed or plastic, no glass. Some suggested items: Cans of vegetables or fruits, applesauce, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk or juice, pasta sauce and noodles, cans of tuna, cans or containers of soup, boxed cereal, canned beans. All donations will go to the Glade Valley Food Bank.
Spelling Bee
The PTA is hosting a Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 6th at 6 pm in the cafeteria. Any 4th or 5th graders is eligible to participate. The winner will go on to represent Glade at the Frederick County Spelling Bee on March 2, 2024. Use this link to register:
HEALTH ROOM NEWS
Hearing and Vision Screening will take place February 7th-8th for all students in kindergarten, (if not screened in pre-kindergarten), 1st grade and new enterers to the Maryland public school system. Rescreens will be on February 28th. Maryland State Law mandates this screening. Parents/guardians who have an objection to this screening based on their church or religion practices must submit a request for their child to be exempt from screening. All written requests must be submitted to the health room by February 2nd. Please make sure if your child wears glasses or contacts that they have them on the screening days. If you have any questions, please contact the health room at 240-636-2056. Thank you.
EARLY DISMISSAL & ABSENCE NOTES
If your student is leaving early or has an appointment, a written note to the office is appreciated. This not only lets the teacher know to have them ready, but assists the office with identifying the parent/guardian of the student and prevents delays.
Any changes in your child's transportation home needs to be shared with the front office. Please CALL the office for dismissal changes before 2:30. If you email the teacher only and they are absent, nobody will get that information. Thank you.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
- Address change: Please provide a new proof of residency (a copy of a property tax bill, gas bill, electric bill, water/sewer, cable bill or a signed current lease/rental agreement; NO phone bill or mortgage statements).
- Custody change: If there is a change in child custody, please make sure you share that information with your child’s teacher and the office. It is extremely important that a copy of the court document be delivered to the school and placed in the child’s permanent record folder. Should the school not have this documentation, we have no recourse but to release your child to either parent upon request.
- Weapons: Possession of any firearm or other weapon by a student on school property is strictly forbidden. This also includes look-alike weapons. The penalties for violation are detailed in the Discipline section of the FCPS handbook. Please remember it is a serious offense to possess a weapon of any kind on school property.
