Weekly Tips for Parents
Strong literacy skills provide students with a foundation for academic achievement and support students’ mastery of AKS in all content areas. Throughout K-12 learning, students continuously strengthen their literacy development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Celebrate International Literacy Day by reading a book with your young person.
Sharing reading with others makes it more fun / Compartir la lectura con otros hace que sea más divertida https://tpitip.com/?44hZ18608 (español)
When teens select their own reading material, they are more likely to enjoy it. That's why it is so
important to encourage your teen to read for pleasure as well as for assignments. One way to do this is to add a social element to reading. Talk together about what your teen is reading. Or, take your teen and a friend to the library. You can also check with the school, a bookstore or the library to find a book discussion group your teen can join.
Steer your teen toward success in school and life /Guíe a su joven hacia el éxito en la escuela y en la vida https://tpitip.com/?44hb18608 (español)
School and life can be challenging for teens. To steer your student toward success in school and life, demonstrate how to make informed decisions, and offer plenty of chances to do so. Make sure your student knows how to use available support systems. Help your teen find positive ways to explore the world and to be useful to others.
How many activities are too many? / ¿Cuántas actividades son demasiadas? https://tpitip.com/?44hd18608 (español)
There are many benefits to participating in after-school sports and clubs, but for some students, adding an activity means adding stress. When deciding if your teen can manage another activity, consider: Does your teen really want to do it? Can your family manage the time or transportation commitment? Will your student still have at least one or two days of unscheduled time after school? Keep in mind that students of all ages need downtime for thinking, relaxing and just growing.

By joining the SSAC, middle school, and high school students gain a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, build networks, and advocate for positive change within their schools.
If you are a student in grades 6-12 and are passionate about making a difference and contributing to the educational system, applying to the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is a rewarding step that allows you to have a voice in shaping your school district's future.
Learn more about the advisory council on our website.
Applications will be available through the Student Portal from August 7-28, 2024. Although the deadline has past, please encourage your child to become or remain involved in helping us to make Gwinnett County Public Schools the best in the nation and Berkmar High School the best high school in the nation.
Civic Engagement

The voter registration drive is a collaboration between Latino Vote and Civic Engagement organizations and the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc., which is a dedicated non-profit, non-partisan organization committed to promoting civic engagement and voter participation as well within the community. We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a voter registration event on September 14, 2024 at Berkmar High School. The event is aimed to encourage and facilitate voter registration, educate the public about the voting process, and ultimately increase voter turnout in the upcoming elections.
In conjunction with the voting registration, there will be a foodie festival celebration consisting of music, art, cuisine and various cultures. The festival will give attendees an opportunity to taste all the best flavors from the Caribbean, Africa, Mexico, Central and South America. Celebrating culinary diversity cuisine like ceviche, mofongo, empanadas and a wide variety of dishes based on seafood and Argentine beef are part of the delicacies that you will be able to try.
The wonderful students of Berkmar High School will also volunteer their time to help with the voter registration in various areas throughout the day. The Berkmar High back-to-back state champion culinary team will also be preparing signature items for the event.
The Foodie festival will be from 11am-5pm and the voter registration booths will run from 12pm-3pm. Please come out, get educated and enjoy the fun.
