October 11, 2024
Hello Spicewood Families,
What a busy week at Spicewood! It has been great to see so many families coming to campus for all of our various events and teacher conferences. We hope you have enjoyed spending some time on campus. Thank you in advance for all of your support! As much as we try to spread things out, October is always very busy!
Just a reminder that there is no school for students on Monday October 14th. This day is set aside for parent teacher conferences.
I want to thank the Westwood students and staff that participated in our pep rally this week. We had members of the band, cheerleaders, and some Sun Dancers come to our campus to celebrate with our Panthers. If your child has not told you about it, please ask. It was awesome! Special thanks to Travis Dalrymple for being our host and Principal Erin Campbell for attending this event. Thank you to our PTA committee that helps organize this wonderful connection between our two campuses!
We hope to see many of you on the Westwood Parade Route next Wednesday and/or at the game next Friday. Spicewood will have a float in the parade and some of our 5th grade students will be participating alongside Paws the Panther and members of our staff! Let's show our spirit and wear your favorite Westwood shirt on Wednesday. If you do not have a Westwood shirt, black, white or burnt orange works as well!
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Melanie Solis

A Note about Student Personal Devices 📴⌚
If your child brings a cell phone or smart watch to school with them, it must remain turned off and inside their backpack during the school day.
Here is what is written in the RRISD Student Handbook regarding this topic:
Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Cell Phones, and Other Electronic Devices
The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes. The use of cell phones or any device capable of capturing images is strictly prohibited in restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored event. If a student uses a telecommunications device without authorization during the school day, the device will be confiscated. The principal will determine whether to return the item to the student at the end of the day or to contact the parents/guardian to pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal’s office for a fee of $15. In limited circumstances and in accordance with law, a student’s personal telecommunications device may be searched by authorized personnel. Any disciplinary action will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
IB at Spicewood
IB Students Supporting Local Organizations 💙
Have you heard of the local non-profit Book Spring? Our 1st graders are studying how “Organizations serve a purpose,” and the purpose of Book Spring is to help others learn to read by providing books to those in need!
On Tuesday, Book Spring representatives visited our 1st graders and shared about their mission. Our 1st graders are taking action to support their cause! They have written letters to their 4th grade buddy classes, informing them about Book Spring, and they have set up a collection box at the front of our school to gather books to donate to Book Spring.
If you are cleaning out your bookshelves to make room for new Book Fair books, donate gently used books to the front of Spicewood! All age ranges welcome. Book Spring will be picking up the books next Friday, October 18th. Thanks for helping us make a local impact!

- It is common, 1 in 5 people are dyslexic
Here is a quick video explaining dyslexia in less than 3 minutes.

A Message from DEI
Let’s Start at the Very Beginning, a Very Good Place to Start
Hey there, Spicewood Families!
One of the most common questions I’ve received in this role is “So what IS DEI anyway” - Let’s dive into some key concepts that explain diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. These aren't just buzzwords—they’re essential building blocks for creating a positive and supportive school environment. So, let’s break them down in a way that's easy to understand and see how they apply to our SWES community.
Diversity: Celebrating Our Differences
Diversity is all about recognizing and appreciating the differences among us. This includes race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, abilities, and even socio-economic status. In a school like ours, it might seem like everyone comes from similar backgrounds, but look closer and you'll see a beautiful mosaic of unique stories and perspectives. Our diversity is what makes our school vibrant and exciting. It’s like a garden with a variety of flowers—each one adds its own special touch. In our school, we celebrate these differences through cultural events, diverse reading materials, and encouraging kids to share their unique experiences.
Equity: Ensuring Fair Opportunities
Equity goes hand in hand with diversity. It’s about making sure every student has access to the same opportunities and resources, regardless of their background or home life. This doesn't mean treating every student exactly the same; instead, it means giving each child what they need to succeed.
For instance, some students might need extra help with reading, while others might benefit from advanced math challenges. We aim to provide tailored support to ensure every child can reach their full potential. Equity ensures that all our students have the tools they need to thrive.
Inclusion: Everyone’s Invited to the Party
Inclusion is about creating an environment where all students feel welcome and valued. It's not just about having diverse students in the classroom; it's about making sure everyone feels like they belong and can fully participate in school life. Imagine a classroom where every student’s voice is heard, where everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and where differences are celebrated. That’s what inclusion looks like. It’s about making sure no one feels left out or marginalized, and that every child is treated like an integral part of the school community.
Belonging: Feeling at Home
Belonging takes inclusion a step further. It's about creating a school environment where every student feels seen, heard, and appreciated for who they are. When students feel they belong, they are more likely to engage, take risks, and succeed academically and socially. Fostering a sense of belonging means building strong, supportive relationships among students, teachers, and families. It’s about ensuring that every child feels they have a place and that they are an important part of our school community.
Putting It All Together
So, how do we bring these concepts to life in our school? Here are a few ways we can make a difference:
1. **Celebrate Diversity**: Encourage students to share their cultures and traditions through projects, events, and classroom discussions.
2. **Promote Equity**: Provide tailored support and resources to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring fair opportunities for all.
3. **Foster Inclusion**: Create a welcoming environment where every student feels valued and included in all activities.
4. **Build Belonging**: Focus on building strong relationships and a supportive community where every child feels they belong.
By embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, we’re not just preparing our students for academic success—we’re helping them become compassionate, empathetic, and globally-minded citizens. Let’s work together to create a school environment where every child can thrive and feel at home. After all, a sense of belonging starts with all of us!
Thank you!
