Notes from the President.

October 10, 2021

Every month I find myself in absolute wonder and awe at how quickly the

time flies by. I remember feeling in August that the holidays seemed so far

away, yet here I am scrambling to get some projects done to make sure I will

be able to mail them off before Christmas. I am not the best planner in the

world, so I am constantly looking for ways to keep myself on schedule to get

things done in a timely fashion. I am hoping this year is the year that I timed

things out right!

In November, I really try to focus on my gratitude. Sometimes the start of

the year and all of the busy-ness of the start of school gets me cranky and

feeling a bit worn down by mid-October. By focusing on some of the many

things I have to be grateful for, I am reminded of how blessed I really am.

Right now, I am very grateful for this guild and all of the members. I look

forward to seeing those of you who have been able to come in person each

month. I enjoy the programs that our vice presidents’ have put together. I

enjoy the opportunity to learn something and to see beautiful work

presented by our presenter and by our guild members during our show and

tell time. Thank you all for being a blessing in my life.

Now onto a little bit of business…Dorene Augustyn (formerly Beck) and

Lynda McGee both stepped forward to offer their help to fill the Member at

Large position we had open. After talking to them both, Dorene is going to

continue being our webmaster and she is going to get involved in the NTQF

at some level. With her taking on those roles, this month we will need to

vote to approve Lynda McGee as our other Member at Large representative.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meeting. I can’t wait to see

what you bring to share with us for Show and Tell.

The board meetings are on the 1st Monday of the month via Zoom link starting at 6:30 pm. If you have something that needs to be brought to the board’s attention or would like a link to the meeting, please contact a board member. Board meetings are open to all, but only board members may vote.

We are looking forward to our November meeting when the quilt shop in Granbury (Sew Much Love) will come to show us new gadgets and fabric lines!! Consider this your personal holiday shopping opportunity and get yourself some treats!!!!

And then in December, we will have extra special fun at our famous Holiday Party!!!! Things to remember in preparation for this event: if for some reason you won't be able to make it, please assign a friend to sign you up AND PAY 10$ for the box lunch of your choice. All of these are guaranteed to be delish, coming as they do from the Gourmet to Go shop Fesstivities!!!!!

PLEASE remember to PAY at the meeting so we can have an accurate count of who will eat with us!!!!!!!!!!

(Aside from Julie - David Beers mentioned how much he enjoyed seeing friends he hadn't seen for awhile at the October meeting.)

Do you like to appliqué? paper piece? have an embroidery machine? Consider making a mini quilt / small wall hanging for next summer’s quilt show.

I have penciled down sit-and-sews for 1st Tuesdays from November to June from 1-5 pm in my home. The playroom can accommodate 7 stitchers. It’s free, but you need to sign up at Guild and make a $10 deposit to be returned when you arrive. You may work on a mini for the Guild or for yourself. Next sit-and-sew is December 7.

How quickly the year is passing into the history book. In November we set the clock back and get that hour back we lost last spring. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. We have so much to be thankful for. I am Thankful for the friendship we share and we are able to meet each month. Thankful for all we have been able to accomplish this year during difficult times.

Secret Quilt Buddies has been put on Hold for now

Mary Lou has requested additional nine patches for HUGS quilts. The nine patches should have five brightly colored squares and 4 white squares. 2.5" squares, finishing at a 6.5" block. To be extra helpful, add sashing, 3.5" wide to finish at 9.5".

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, teacher, and friend. We lost her way too early. The fund was set up to help those in need to be able to enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.

NICU Quilts

Please consider making a couple of 36" square NICU quilts for JPS. It's a great chance to use up some stash, try a new pattern, etc. I will be collecting them at meetings. Their website, below, identifies other needs for sewn, knitted and crocheted donations.

Minutes

A motion was made by Judy Turner and seconded by Ann Houpt, to approve the minutes of the September meeting, as published in the newsletter.

Treasurers report

Karen Wiesman gave the Treasurers report, with an ending balance of $25,413.26

Membership

Membership dues will increase by $5.00. All but two members were in favor of the increase. There will also be an increase in the workshop fees, from $25 to $35.

Lovies

Beverly Peterson is collecting 14” cotton/flannel lovies. She has plenty of flannel but is in need of coordinating cottons.

Hospitality

Marilyn Smith announced the members celebrating a birthday this month.

Retreat

Karen Rhyneer is heading up the Quilt Retreat again this year. The dates are April 21-24, 2022 at the Compass Center. You can reserve your spot with a $25 deposit. Karen is taking installment payments .

Programs

Thayne Rooney welcomed Barb Eikmeier as our guest speaker at the October meeting. Her program was “It’s all in the sashing”.

November program we will welcome Sew Much Love quilt shop from Granbury.

December will be our Guild Holiday Party. Feastivities will cater for $10 per person. Thayne will need a head count at the November meeting.

There will be an ornament exchange. Please bring your ornament in a plain brown paper bag.

Raffle Quilt

Cecilia Buckholz has raffle tickets for each member to sell. Tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10.00. Each member is expected to sell at least $20 worth. The date for the drawing is November 15, 2022. If you did not pick up your tickets at the October meeting, please see her at the next meeting. It will take the whole Guild to make this fundraiser a success.

Mini Quilt Auction

Jonquele Jones spoke about the mini quilts for the next quilt show. She showed several examples of mini’s and encouraged the members to get an early start on making them. This is another excellent money maker for the Guild, as long as we turn in our quota.

Show and Tell

Judy Turner showed two “fidget quilts” she made for the patients at Harris Hospital. She encouraged others to join her in making them.

Jean Moulder showed a colorful quilt she says started out as a jelly roll race quilt. She didn’t like how it turned out , so she chopped it up and sewed it back together.

Lynda McGee showed “Wedding Blues” made for Nick, unfortunately the wedding was cancelled three weeks before the big day.

Lynda McGee also showed “Puzzles Fun” that was to be for Noah. This was to welcome Noah into the family when his Mom married Nick. Oh well.

Lynda also showed the quilt she made for her nephew Joseph and his wife Reyna’s marriage. She makes a quilt for every niece and nephew’s wedding.

Wanda Edmonds showed “Acid Green Log” quilted by Dave, made for herself. This was made with a jelly roll and embroidery in the center.

Jonquele Jones showed “Neon City”, a wonky Dresden wall hanging she made for herself.

Jonquele also showed Nicholas’ house warming, a quilt she made for her Son in Law. It was a Pat Speth quilt along. Quilted by Cecilia Buckholz

Another quilt pieced by Jonquele and quilted by Cecilia, was called Floral North Star. It was also a Pat Speth quilt along.

Sue Hilgardner showed two vintage quilt tops she found in a cedar chest in her Mother in Laws house. The chest had not been opened since 1963. Sues mother in law did not sew, so she’s not sure who made them or when.

Gillian Cole showed “Fall Leaf” a quilt she started in a Shannon Brinkley workshop, and finally finished.

Gillian also showed “Xanadu”, a mystery quilt by Deb Heatherly for Grid Girls. Too many biases, she’s happy to get it done. Not yet quilted.

Cecilia Buckholz showed a lap quilt she pieced and quilted for her Sister in Law, called Spicy Diamonds.

Last minute announcement: Wanda Edmonds announced Sewing World will be having Embroidery Club meetings on the first Thursday of each month from 10-1.
