From Principal Lisa Newlyn
Greetings from the Jr. Rose Festival Parade where Ms. Miller and I proudly escorted our Marching Band through the streets of NE Portland. I LOVE the Rose Festival, and as a Portland native am thoroughly delighted to participate with our middle schoolers.
With just 7 days left to this school year, it’s time for reflections and celebrations. This has been a year like no other at RGMS and with it I think are important lessons and acknowledgements.
First, please join me in a HUGE thank you to the Jackson Middle School Community. Principal Ferraro, his staff and students, as well as the JMS PTA, have been nothing but gracious and welcoming to us. They had no idea that the winter storm would impact their professional lives and their generosity of spirit and collegial engagement has been a silver lining to a tough situation. If you have a chance to send a message to Principal Ferraro, please do so: jferraro@pps.net. His team is preparing for Fall when Markham Elementary joins the campus through Winter Break; they can use some goodwill and appreciations.
The real stars of this year are our AMAZING staff! They put their hearts and souls into their work with your students because they love middle schoolers and they love teaching. This year would not have been a success without their dedication, compassion, and commitment to the RGMS Community. If you have a chance, please send them some love.
And, on that note, THANK YOU to the RGMS/JMS PTA for hosting our Kona Ice Truck for both our staffs next week!!
Click the link below and HERE for all the latest updates for our End of Year activities. It’s hoppin’! While we keep teaching and learning routines tight, we are also adding fun and celebration into our lives. THANK YOU CJ MEAD and our Climate and Culture Team for all the planning for our special events, especially the Student vs. Staff Kickball game!
There are two more editions to the RGMS Weekly coming up before we close for the year. Read on below for all the latest coming up in this week ahead.

Lisa Newlyn - Proud Principal

On June 24, 5-7 pm, Friends of Alpenrose will host a public community conversation focusing on transportation. We hope you can attend. The event will be at Hayhurst Elementary School. Metro Councilor Duncan Hwang, State Rep. Dacia Grayber and other officials from Portland, Washington County and ODOT will be on hand to listen to community concerns and provide information about how the transportation planning process works.
Please join us for the community conversation on June 24th, and contact Friends of Alpenrose at info@friendsofalpenrose.org with any questions. Thank you.

Wait Until 8th
Wait Until 8th: Let’s Not Wait to Bring Social Norm Changes Around Smartphone Use to the Great Rieke/Robert Gray Community! Meet and learn more on Tuesday, June 11th 7-8PM in the Rieke Gym What it IS: The Wait Until 8th pledge is a national pledge that encourages parents to unite within their school communities in delaying giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade and encourages waiting for social media until 16 years old. By working together, we can reduce the pressure on kids and parents and create new social norms. It IS possible. What it IS NOT: The pledge is NOT about avoiding all screen time or forbidding phones until 8th grade. Basic phones that only call and text are available for younger kids. The pledge focuses on delaying smartphones while allowing for communication through simpler devices like an old-school flip phone or a smartphone-looking device like the Gabb Phone. It's not too late to make changes, and it’s NOT about judgment. We understand the challenges and recognize that technology can be beneficial, as it was during times like the pandemic. We are also just now getting real data on the effects it has on kids. Why it’s IMPORTANT: Smartphones are changing childhood and adolescence. Outdoor play, time with friends, reading, and family activities are being replaced by hours on social media and YouTube. Experts warn that smartphones are addictive; interfere with sleep, relationships, and concentration; and increase risks of depression, anxiety, and cyberbullying. Our kids deserve a childhood with fewer distractions, but they also deserve to have a community they don’t feel isolated from. If enough of us take the pledge, they will! Get Involved: Come: to the parent run Rieke & Robert Gray Cluster Schools Meeting to learn more on Tuesday, June 11th, in the Rieke Gym from 7-8 PM (Bridlemile and Hayhurst Schools will also be notified of the upcoming meeting ). Contact: Bryan Danforth (bldforth@hotmail.com) or Beth Higgins (bethpmhnp@outlook.com) with any questions.
Take the pledge: If you can’t come to the meeting but want to learn more, please check out the Wait Until 8th website and take the pledge: https://www.waituntil8th.org/take-the-pledge . Make our school community officially apart of the "Wait Until 8th” community.

8th Grade Parents
Looking for a way to get involved at Ida B. Wells High School next year? The Ida B. Wells PTA works to keep parents informed, support teachers, advocate for the Ida B. Wells community, and fund teacher grants and academic programs. We provide funds for classroom projects, staff recognition, and academic scholarships, as well as arrange parent education workshops and sponsor the grad night party.
The IBW PTA is looking to fill leadership positions for 2024-2025. Most positions involve a time commitment of only 2-5 hours/month, with meetings about every other month. We still need to fill the following board roles: president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and membership. Open committee chair: fundraising. Experienced board and committee members are available to assist in the transition next year.
Learn more about the IBW PTA on the school website here. For an overview of all the IBW parent groups see here. Questions? Email Julie Worley at idabwellspta@gmail.com.
