Fall Baking
With the weather starting to turn cooler, baking can be a fun indoor activity. Furthermore, baking can be a fun way to teach a variety of academic and life skills, including:
- Math: Baking involves measurements, fractions, conversions, and more. For example, you can teach kids how to divide by cutting a recipe in half, and how to multiply by doubling it.
- Science: Baking is a hands-on way to learn about chemical reactions, temperature, and how heat transforms ingredients. For example, you can talk about how water turns from a solid to a liquid to a steam when heated.
Time management: Recipes require specific baking times and temperatures, which teaches kids about patience and precision.
Reading and comprehension: Following recipe instructions helps kids learn new culinary vocabulary.
Critical thinking: Baking can help kids troubleshoot problems and experiment with different ingredients and techniques.
Fine motor skills: Baking activities like pouring, making shapes with batter, and rolling dough help strengthen fine motor skills.
Life skills: Baking can help kids learn to keep an open mind and gain new perspective.
