Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
National Hispanic Heritage Month
Q: Why does Hispanic Heritage Month begin on September 15th, and not September 1st?
A: HHM was enacted into law in 1988, to honor and celebrate the contributions of people of Hispanic origin to our country's history. It begins on September 15th because many Hispanic and Latin countries celebrate their Independence on and between September 15 and October 15th.
Influential Hispanic Americans
Cesar Chavez: Mexican-American labor leader and civil rights activist who helped improve the
working and living conditions of farm workers.
Sonia Sotomayer: American of Puerto Rican descent who became the first Hispanic U.S. Supreme
Court Justice, and the 3rd female to serve on the Supreme Court.
Ellen Ochoa: American engineer and astronaut, who became the first Latina to go into space.
Welcoming Week
Welcoming Week (September 13-22) is a time to celebrate diversity in the classroom and ensure all students, including those new to the community or country, feel welcome.
Staff Spotlight/Shout Outs π
Lindsey Turnwald
I am changing grades this year and she came in to help me and Keegan swap rooms. Then she spent the whole week with me-organizing, purging and moving things that I cannot lift due to having surgery. I cannot thank her enough for helping me through this process!
~ Abbey Collins
Keegan Collins
Keegan and I are switching classes and because I had surgery this summer, he came in and helped me with the swapping room process. I truly appreciate his help in lifting and shifting everything to our new rooms.
~ Abbey Collins
Katie Sackner
I would like to shout out Katie Sackner for helping me in my room today. She spent the afternoon helping to organize the materials brought in by the kids and cleaned up our computers and cart! I know she probably could have been doing a million other things for herself but she chose to help me which I am incredibly thankful for.
~ Abbey Collins
Maggie Wild
Iβd like to shout out Maggie Wild for checking in on me multiple times today while I was dealing with a flare up of health related issues. (Iβm ok) I appreciate her care and concern for me.
~ Abbey Collins
Kari Atkins, Stephanie Janigian, & Katherine Patrico
Iβd like to shout out the third grade team - Kari Atkins, Stephanie Janigian and Katherine Patrico - for being so supportive of my joining their forces. I appreciate all their patience and answers to questions Iβve had. Theyβve given me really good suggestions and tips to aid in my move from first to third. Cheers to a new year!
~ Abbey Collins
Lisa Alexandrowicz
I also want to shout out Lisa Alexandrowicz for helping me to arrange my furniture since I couldnβt lift it due to surgery. Sheβs amazing at figuring out how to make the βspaceβ work.

Did you know... π‘
Did you know a mailman made a castle in France?
Le Palais IdΓ©al is an 85-foot-long, 33-foot-high castle located south of Lyon made from rocks that a 19th-century French postman picked up during his mail route over the course of 34 years. Even though the mailman had no formal architecture training, he built the castle himself including the pillars, grottoes, and flying buttresses. Today, the massive structure still stands and visitors still go see it today.
