Hello Glennwood Families,
We have had a great week of learning at Glennwood! As we approach the fall season, please note that we have LOTS of amazing opportunities for you and your families to get involved. The PTA Fall Carnival, Booktoberfest, and the Book Fair are just a few of the events that need our wonderful parent volunteers! Please check our school calendar and the weekly newsletter for details.
Parents – we need your help with after school walker logistics. If students are playing out front after school, they should remain in this area only. It is unsafe for them to play near the car-rider dismissal area at the side of the school and anywhere in the parking lot.
Finally, we will be scheduling parent-teacher conferences in-person or virtually this year during the weeks of September 30 and October 7. We look forward to a rich discussion about the academic and work habits-related progress your child demonstrated throughout the first nine weeks of school. You should receive an email/notification from your child's teacher with information regarding how to sign up for a parent-teacher conference soon. Please note that missed conferences may not be able to be rescheduled promptly.
At this conference, your child’s teacher will share overall impressions regarding how your child is adapting to the routines of the classroom, the behaviors your child exhibits that promote learning, as well as results from formative and universal screener assessments that we have administered.
This conference, along with your child’s progress report, will be the official method for communicating your child’s progress for the first nine weeks of school.
Thank you so much for collaborating with us to support your child's continued growth and success.
Warmest regards,
Holly Brookins, Ph.D.
Principal
And the Winner is.....FLOCK OF EAGLES!
Congratulations to our very own parent band FLOCK OF EAGLES for winning this year's DEF Battle of the Bands!!! Woo hoo!! You are ROCKING it! We are so proud!
Thank you to all the families who came out to support the event and voted for Glennwood! Our school music program won a $1,000 music grant from the Decatur Education Foundation. Thank you, DEF!!!
Pick Up Patrol Reminder for Families
On Early Release Days, the cut off time for changes in Pick Up Patrol in dismissal is 12:00 pm. Please make a note of this. Our next early release day is Friday, September 20. Thank you.
Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester, the Gifted Review Team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it into the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 2. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood Elementary is Susanna Shewan. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit the Gifted and Talented Services webpage.
Glennwood Media Center Updates
Booktoberfest is coming!! We will celebrate our love for reading during the entire month of October. More details will be shared in next week's Eagle Edition.
Reminders
After School Hours - Students are welcome to visit and check out books after school when accompanied by a parent/caregiver on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 3:30 p.m. Parents may also sign up to be library patrons and check out up to five books at a time. If you are interested in becoming a patron, please email Anne Dishman, our media clerk at adishman@csdecatur.net to sign up, and she will give you more information.
Eagle Bookstore - If a student earns an Eagle Book Buck for SOARing high, they get to shop at our Eagle Bookstore and purchase a gently used, donated book. These books do not need to be returned. Note: A library book will have a Glennwood barcode on the back.
Library Day - Students may always check out books when they return their books on their class' library day, in addition to individual visits during the week as needed. Please review the schedule below to see when your child's library time is each week:
Wednesdays: Guilfoile, Ronco and Rose
Thursdays: Bennett, Jones, Kaplan, Marquez, Turnipseed and VanDuzer
Please make sure their library books are in their backpacks on these days.
Wylde Center Partnership
We are excited to announce a new partnership with the local environmental education nonprofit, The Wylde Center! Each month, students will participate in hands-on garden classes led by Wylde Center educators that reinforce environmental science, gardening, nutrition, and social-emotional learning. Lesson topics include composting, plant parts, pollination and nature journaling. Additionally, the Wylde Center will provide professional development programming for our wonderful educators through monthly webinars, resources, and an in-person annual training.
Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this fantastic program! If you would like to support programming like this, please consider donating to or volunteering with the Glennwood PTA.
Learn more about the Wylde Center at their website or explore one of their many community gardens and educational sites around the city.
