Yearbook Cover Contest Winner!
Congratulations Kartik!
Congratulations to Kartik Jain, fifth grade, this year's yearbook cover art winner! His artwork will be featured as the front cover of this year's Highlands yearbook! We had 13 fantastic entries this year, voted on by the entire student body and some staff members on Monday. All of the runner up artists will be featured in the yearbook this year as well!
Photoshare
The Highlands yearbook team is looking for your photos! Please help us create our 2024-25 yearbook by sharing your photos throughout the year! Our goal is to showcase all of our wonderful students as much as possible in our yearbook, and we can't do it without your help! This year Jostens has a user friendly way to share your photos. Simply follow the link Share Here to upload your photos. You can upload photos easily from your smartphone, computer, or tablet! Please tag your images with student name(s) and the activity or event showcased. Photoshare allows you to tag multiple photos just once, so it is quick and easy for you to do! Please feel free to reach out to Amanda Jeske (amjeske11@gmail.com) with any questions!
Highlands Information Night
Saturday, Jan. 11 - Jan. 26, 2025 - Register your kindergartener for the 2025-26 school year online during the enrollment window.
Lost and Found Club
Highland second graders, Penny, Emmy and Harlow started the Lost and Found Club last year. They saw a need for a more organized lost and found and came up with the idea to help the Highlands community! They exhibit our Character Strong trait of responsibility. Please help the Lost and Found Club by putting your student's last name on their clothing, lunch boxes, water bottles and accessories to ensure those items return to your student.
October 14-18 is Digital Citizenship Week!
It is important that all students (and adults!) learn how to be safe, healthy, and respectful Digital Citizens. Ashley Krohn, Highlands’ Library Media Specialist, co-teaches age-appropriate lessons with classroom teachers to all grade levels throughout the school year in media. It is important for students to hear similar messages in all aspects of their lives, including at home. Common Sense Media is an excellent resource that is valuable to both caregivers and educators. Encourage your students to make screen time safe and positive.
Entertainment and tech have the potential to spark meaningful conversations. And tech planners are a great way for kids to have a shared understanding of how your family makes the most out of entertainment and tech time. Use the planners below (created by Common Sense Media) to inspire conversations about tech use as a family.

Age 9-12 Tech Planner En Espanol
In addition, here are some other great tips for families in general! Digital Citizenship Resources
If you ever have questions regarding screen time, devices, or digital citizenship for your child(ren), feel free to reach out to Ashley Krohn (highlands.media@edinaschools.org) for suggestions!
National Anti-Bullying Month
October is National Anti-Bullying month! This month Highlands will be connecting with students about anti-bullying and how it connects into our Character Strong trait of Responsibility.
October 24 is Unity Day at Highlands! Please wear orange to send a visible message of building community through kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying.
Oaki Outdoor Gear
Our fabulous Highlands PTO has helped to purchase Oaki rainboots and one-piece suits for students from about Kindergarten size to 3rd grade size for use during the school day. It is our goal to have enough for all students eventually. Until then, should you want to purchase your own gear that can be brought back and forth or even left at home, you can at a special discounted rate!
Go to Oaki.com and use discount code HighlandsElementary for a 25% discount of a $29.99+ total purchase.
Please No Pumpkins at Highlands
We have Highlands staff who are allergic to pumpkins. Please not bring decorative pumpkins into the school. Did you know any hard-skinned squash could be called a pumpkin? There's no botanical distinction that makes a pumpkin a pumpkin. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
