SCS RESPONSIBLE RESTART COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE
Our District has created the SCS Responsible Restart Comprehensive Guide - one document in one location outlining our District’s policies and procedures. This document should be used as a guide, allowing you to quickly find answers to your questions. The guide can also be found at www.strongnet.org/restart.
As we have seen throughout the pandemic, factors can change on a daily basis and this Guide will remain adjustable and flexible to respond to state and local health guidelines.
MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MRS. EMILY HAVEL, FIRST GRADE TEACHER AT WHITNEY ELEMENTARY
Mrs. Emily Havel is beginning her fourteenth year teaching in our District. Whitney Elementary has been her teaching home for all but one of those years, where she is currently a first grade teacher. Mrs. Havel is a proud graduate of Strongsville High School and continues to be a resident of our community. She has three children currently attending Strongsville City Schools. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Akron and a graduate degree from Walden University.
“I feel very lucky to work with first graders. The children learn, grow and mature so much over the course of the first grade year that it does seem like some sort of magic. Of course, it's not my magic, but that of the students, their families and all of our teachers and staff who work with me to guide them along the way. During our year together, we work to master academic standards, but just as importantly we really emphasize showing our Mustang PRIDE. I hope to instill in them a positive attitude toward learning, the courage to take on challenges, the satisfaction of celebrating their strengths, and the value of respect. My wish is that their time in first grade is just the beginning of a successful school career and beyond,” said Mrs. Havel.
She added, “My absolute favorite part of our days together is my time reading to the children. I LOVE books and lucky for us, there are so many to share! It is a joy to share storytelling with my first graders and watch them become enamored with the characters and their adventures.”

CHANNEL 19 METEOROLOGIST KELLY DOBECK (SHS CLASS OF 2012) VISITS KINSNER ELEMENTARY
Channel 19 Meteorologist and SHS Grad (Class of 2012) Kelly Dobeck recently visited Kinsner Elementary School to record a special segment on kids science experiments. Kelly worked with a few student volunteers to see why some were able to walk across an egg carton without breaking any eggs. Click HERE to see the results of the experiment!
BREAKFAST/LUNCH FOR SCS STUDENTS
Breakfast and lunch continues to be available for our students. As students return to in person learning, elementary students must pre-register for breakfast and/or lunch by 10pm the day before by clicking HERE. SMS and SHS students will be able to visit the cafeteria at designated times and choose their daily entrees and ala carte selections. In the Blended Learning framework, breakfast and lunch will be available for SMS and SHS students for their three days per week of remote learning. An email will be sent with specific details on how families may pick up these meals. Students in the SOLO program will also receive a weekly email to request meal pickups. As a reminder, The USDA recently announced that ALL students will be able to receive FREE breakfast and lunch until December 31, 2020 or until available funding runs out.
SHS GIRLS GOLF FINISHES 2ND IN THE GREATER CLEVELAND CONFERENCE
The SHS varsity girls golf team competed this week in the final Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) tournament at Sweetbriar Golf Course in Avon Lake. The team shot a 371 and finished 2nd overall in the GCC. Congratulations to Reagan Bass (Senior), Grace DuPerow (Junior), and Natalie Kostalnick (Freshman) - all three were named to the All Conference team!
SCS TECH CORRAL - YOUR TECH SUPPORT WEBSITE
Our Instructional Technology Department and Curriculum Department have partnered in the creation of the 'SCS Tech Corral.' The site includes reference guides and 'how-to' videos for a number of common programs and software our students and teachers are utilizing. This is a great resource with lots of helpful information. PCs FOR PEOPLE
PCs for People recycles business electronics and provides refurbished computers and low-cost internet to under-resourced households and communities. This program provides financial aid to families in Cuyahoga County with K-12 students by distributing 10,000 free computers and 5,000 hotspots through a partnership with participating Cuyahoga County and Cleveland Public Libraries. Registrations are currently open for the week of October 5th so families can gain access to a computer in their home within a few weeks! Strongsville Basketball League Tryouts
Tryouts for the Strongsville Basketball League will be held on Sunday, October 4 for boys and girls in grades 3-6. Tryouts will be held at Strongsville High School at the following times:
4pm - 5pm / 3rd Grade + 4th Grade (Boys and Girls)
5pm - 6pm / 5th Grade (Boys and Girls)
6pm - 7pm / 6th Grade (Boys and Girls)

Great Lakes Science Center Learning Lab
Great Lakes Science Center’s new Learning Lab program supports working parents who need daytime childcare for their school-age children. The program provides a safe, supportive environment where children can do their schoolwork virtually. Many of the Science Center’s health and safety procedures for programming during the pandemic were developed for Camp Curiosity, which served more than 1,000 children this summer.
