Counseling Corner
Hello Families - Just a reminder of the support we offer for students as we start to review the first progress report.
Teachers: We encourage students to work on self advocacy skills and talk to their teacher if they do not understand something from class, need clarification, get ready for an upcoming test, or want to review missing work.
Counselors: We are happy to talk to students about any challenges they are having in or out of the classroom.
Academy: Each student has an academy teacher. Its noted in their schedule. But, they can use Flexisched to request to see other teachers during the Wednesday and Friday academy time.
Peer Tutoring: During Academy time, students have the choice to be with a peer tutor vs going to see a teacher. Students select “Peer Tutoring” for Academy and are then paired, under the guidance of a teacher, with a peer who can help them in a specific subject area.
Parenting and Anxious Children
The Piedmont Parents Network (PPN) is excited to present the first event in our speaker series on Wednesday, October 23 from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Havens Library. All parents/caregivers of middle school students are invited to attend.
Mindy Szelap will share insights and knowledge about how parents can shift their behaviors to encourage resilience and independence in kids as a means to reduce anxiety. Question and Answer session to follow the talk. Mindy Szelap (https://www.bayareaspacetreatment.com/) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of experience working with children, teens, and families in pediatrics.
Ms. Szelap specializes in the treatment of anxiety, OCD, depression, and pediatric chronic illness and pain, utilizing evidence based treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure/response prevention, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), strategic therapy, internal family systems (IFS), and clinical hypnosis. She works extensively with families of young children to interrupt anxious patterns before they take hold. Her background is strongly rooted in pediatrics, child and adolescent development, and behavioral therapies.

Highlander of the Week
- What quality(ies) best describes this student? Elspeth possesses the incredible ability to enter a room and immediately lift the spirits of her peers and faculty alike. Her habit of choosing a joyful disposition at all times exemplifies the Highlander spirit we wish for all members of the community.
- How long have you known the student? When asked “how long have you known this student?”, one faculty member with no sincerity replied “too long”, before ending on a serious note with “not long enough, never long enough”.
- What is the most memorable event you have of this student?
A favorite memory of Elspeth when she revealed in an ice breaker activity that she has a birthmark on the back of her eye. We still don’t know what that means exactly. - How does this student Achieve the Honorable? Elspeth achieves the honorable by consistently accepting responsibility for her own decisions and actions. She is a true joy to be around at all times.
- If there was one word to describe this student, what would it be? If there was one word to describe Elspeth, it would be uplifting.
- So far this year, what has been your most memorable experience? The most memorable experience has been the first home football game of the year. There was so much school spirit.
- If you were to describe PHS to someone who is thinking about coming, what would you say to them? I would say it is a small high school where everyone knows each other and where students are academically motivated.
- If you were in charge at PHS, what is one action you might take to make it better? I would improve the school food, by making it where kids want to stay on campus and eat and I would want to have more dances and school spirit activities.
- If you could share one sentence with your parents/guardians, what would you say? there is only one Elspeth.
- What is your favorite word? Spunky
- What is your favorite song? Valerie by Amy Winehouse or August by Taylor Swift
- What is your favorite food? Steak
- Can you share a photo of something from your summer and why it is special to you? Me and my friends in Lake Tahoe for the Fourth of July

PEF Launches Giving Campaign with Strong Community Support
With great community enthusiasm, the Piedmont Education Foundation (PEF) kicked off its annual Giving Campaign on September 24. Families and supporters showed their spirit by wearing purple, while Mulberry’s Market generously donated popsicles for the celebration.
PEF’s Giving Campaign plays a vital role in supporting Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD), contributing 8% to the district's budget. Every contribution helps maintain quality programs and plan for the future. This year’s goal is 100% participation and raising over $3.5 million, with all 27 PEF Board members already pledging their support.

Highlander Trivia
Thanks to all those that participated in the Highlander question last week.
The question: In Semester 1 of last year (2023-24 SY), what is the average number of AP/Honors classes taken? (Consider all students, round to the nearest thousandth)
So, the average number of AP tests taken by grade level is thus:
Grade 9: 0.03086419753
Grade 10: 1.507853403
Grade 11: 3.126126126
Grade 12: 2.355769231
All Students: 1.88633461
We had a person guess pretty close to that...at 1.798.
Congratulations to Athena Li. Please come into the principal's office to claim your prize.
