Vikings, we hope the start to summer has been an enjoyable one. Last night, the Board of Education was anything but on summer break. Please read on for the details…
Early Learning and Primary Center Capital Survey Results
Mr. Scott Girard of School Perceptions shared the results of this past spring’s capital survey. As a testament to the engagement level of this community, over 1,560 people responded, which accounts for a statistically significant 25.6% return rate (margin of error +/- 2.53%). After several months of study, a cross-section of community members proposed the following plan:
In addition, a potential $34 million capital project would include updating the middle school’s special education classrooms while improving compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; replacing the Intermediate Center gym roof (original to the structure); and repairing the brickwork that was part of the high school’s 1997 expansion.
When testing the viability of the team’s plan, it was important the results are weighted to reflect the fact that approximately 70%+ of our community do not have children in the schools. In so doing, we learned that if a vote were held today, 54.1% of respondents would likely support the plan. As a next step, the Board will discuss whether a capital referendum is in the offing. A decision will be made before the end of summer.
In Action Items...
The Board...
- approved the addition of three high school courses for the District’s International Baccalaureate Career Related Programme that launches in the fall of 2025. IB Business Management; IB Sports, Exercise, and Health Sciences; and IB Personal and Professional Skills.
- approved the planned purchase of computers, monitors, and tablets. This is part of our Technology Replacement Plan.
In Closing...
Finally, I am pleased to report that the MHASD has successfully received a reimbursement grant for an electric school bus. You will be seeing that on the road within the next 12 months – (It takes time to build). All good things are worth waiting for…
… including the start of the next school year. Please enjoy your summer.
I am proud to be a Viking, and I hope you are too!
