Dear Friends
November 7, 2023
It's election day! Remember to return your completed ballots
It's election day! Remember to turn in those completed ballots!
There are two Snohomish School District School Board positions on the November 7 ballot. School Board members represent the interests of the entire Snohomish School District. Although there can only be one board member from each boundary district (1-5), all district voters cast ballots for all board member positions.
As a reminder, ballot boxes are located at:
- Centennial Middle School
- Glacier Peak High School
- Sno-Isle Library in downtown Snohomish
Completed ballots can also be put in any USPS mailbox. No stamp is needed.
Drop boxes are open 24/7 until 8 p.m. on November 7. Mail-in ballots must be in a USPS mailbox before the last pick-up time on November 7 to be postmarked on time.

412 students screened at Nick of Time Foundation event
Last week, Snohomish School District partnered with Nick of Time Foundation to provide free heart screenings for kids ages 12 and older. 129 adult health care volunteers came from all corners of the region along with district parents/guardians and community volunteers, to perform the 412 screenings at Snohomish High School.
Nick of Time Foundation is committed to raising awareness and preventing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Students were not only screened for their own heart health, but they were also given hands on instruction on CPR, automated external defibrillators (AED) machines, and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest. Statistics show there is a higher rate of survival with SCA when public bystanders are prepared with how to help.
Thank you to the Nick of Time Foundation for educating and screening our community, to the Snohomish School District team put helping put this important event together, and to all of the families who took advantage of this incredible opportunity! Also thanks to Sandberg Volvo, Snohomish Education Foundation, and Rick Johnson for their financial support of the event volunteer hospitality room. We appreciate your commitment to making sure all the students in the Snohomish School District community are “HEARTsafe."

November Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Native American Heritage Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Recognizing diversity facilitates our collective ability to support each and every student and family regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, physical ability, cognitive ability, background, personality, and more.
Diversity presents the opportunity for critical thinking to occur through exposure to different viewpoints, life experiences, and beliefs allowing us to explore and examine our world. Check out this article communicating the benefits of inclusion and diversity in the classroom.
Native American Heritage Month was first recognized in 1990 after approval of a resolution by President George H. W. Bush. Since then proclamations have been made each November under various names including National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.
Skykomish Valley Indian Education (SVIE) is a federally funded program serving Native students in the Snohomish, Monroe, and Sultan school districts who are enrolled tribal members or have a parent/guardian or grandparent who is or was an enrolled tribal member. SVIE coordinates programs throughout the year for the entire community, such as its holiday make and take, pow wow and activities at the longhouse during fair time. In the past, these culture nights have been held to strengthen ties in our Native community and enroll new families. Learn more about SVIE by clicking here. Questions may be directed to Mars Miller, Family Liaison Coordinator, at millerm@monroe.wednet.edu or 425-359-8935.
For more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link from pta.org.

Milk carton shortage
We want you to be aware of impacts to our food service program resulting from a nationwide shortage of milk cartons. This shortage is already impacting the east coast, and we have been notified that this shortage could last up to six months.
Beginning this week, our food service provider, Chartwells, will likely not be able to purchase cartons of milk, due to the shortage of cartons, for our district meal program. We are working with our government partners and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction on this situation and a potential solution until we are able to get milk provided in cartons. In the meantime, our food service team will have water and juice available as alternatives. In addition, they are investigating other avenues to provide milk to students. At this time, any supply of milk we have available will be prioritized for students receiving breakfast.
We appreciate your understanding.
K-3 highly capable program information
If your student is currently in grades K-3 and you are interested in your student receiving highly capable services to include learning opportunities with more depth, complexity, and acceleration in the classroom please be aware of the following information. Students currently identified for highly capable K-3 services do not need to go through the K-3 referral process.
Printed referral packets for the K-3 highly capable program are available in all elementary schools, and on the Snohomish School District websites in English, Spanish and Russian. The completed referral packet is due Wednesday, November 8, and can be turned in at your home school or the Snohomish School District office (drop box located by the main entrance) located at 1601 Avenue D in Snohomish. Fall reminders
With the end of daylight savings time comes an increase in darkness. Studies have also shown that time change can also leave many of us feeling fatigued, which can pose some safety risks. Below are some reminders for school and home safety:
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Approach all crosswalks, intersections and bus stops with caution, as it will be harder to see students, pedestrians and cyclists.
- Walk with others if out in the dark.
- Wear reflective clothing if walking or riding a bike.
- Do not leave valuables in vehicles.
- Pick up your mail and packages from mailboxes/porches each day and bring inside.
- Prepare a winter emergency kit for your vehicle. Such kits can be a lifesaver if you are stuck out in bad weather while driving. They should include items such as warm clothes, blanket, flashlight, batteries, water, non-perishable snacks, shovel, flares, reflective hazard triangle, jumper cables, cat litter or sand for traction, tire chains, ski hat and gloves.
- Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are headed.
- Ensure your clocks, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are working properly and replace the batteries.
- Review your family emergency plan, or create one for the first time.
- Don’t hesitate to call 911 if you see suspicious activity or behavior.
