Message from the President
Spring is finally here and I'm watching some much needed rain finally come down. Hopefully you're all enjoying the warmer weather, longer days, and more opportunities for getting outside with your beardies!
We are gearing up for our annual specialty weekend in April and excited for what is sure to be another wonderful opportunity to showcase our breed. For those of you planning to attend as exhibitors or spectators, be sure to let us know if you'll need grooming space or want to order lunch.
For Grooming:
Please email ncbccpresident@gmail.com by April 2nd with the number of crates and tables for which you will require space. Site Control reserves the right to condense any grooming setups.
For Lunches:
Fill out this form: https://forms.gle/fUmJanaqAtRts8NW6. You will later be invoiced to pay for it.
In addition to our specialties, the weekend will hold 5 opportunities to compete in obedience and 5 opportunities to compete in rally.
More information for each event can be found here:

In addition to our specialty events, the NCBCC board is working on gathering information to determine if a club herding event can be offered as well as adjusting our typical timeline for the annual agility trials. We hope to have more information for you in the near future.
In the meantime, if you have any wishes or ideas for club events, we are always open to hearing them.
In response to the horrific wildfires in California, NCBCC made a donation of $1,000 to the Pasadena Humane Society to support wildfire relief. Club members are encouraged to make suggestions to the board regarding recipients of NCBCC's annual giving.
Hug your beardies and we hope to see many of you soon!

Get Nosy!! by Lynne Corn
Any Size, Any Age—Dog OR Handler!
Every dog has a nose, and every one of those noses is better than that of any human. Maybe you have seen some of those noses at work at an airport or at a secure location near the White House, the Capitol, or immigration control. Some are protection dogs, but many a just using their amazing noses to detect bombs, guns, fruits, vegetables, or drugs.
So why not train your beardies? Not for guns or drugs, of course, but for some other scents? AKC and other organizations such as the National Association for Canine Scent Work support training for any dog of any breed. In a class, you train your dog to find birch, anise, clove, or cypress oils. First they learn that boxes may contain their favorite goody (cheese, hot dog bit, biscuit etc.). Then they are taught that if they sniff one of these scents in the box, and alert their human to it, they will get the treat. Gradually, they move on to searching rooms, cars, outdoor spaces, and objects buried in sand or in water-filled boxes. In a trial, there are time limits on these searches.
I’ve been training Glenna and Oboe for a couple of years to do these searches. And here’s a happy plus: an elderly beardie may lose his hearing or her eyesight may deteriorate, but that amazing nose keeps working. As long as your elderly beardies are ready to search, they can still compete, because this event does not rely on great physical fitness. Not even for the handler! I just had Glenna (who is 15 & ½ , almost completely deaf, and has reduced vision) compete in her fourth trial where she completed another title. There are various training options in the area. I think it helps her stay mentally alert even if she no longer moves very fast. So I hope that some more beardies will get out there and get nosy!

2025 Agility trial: October 2025 should be 25-27, bumping up against other agility trials & the 2025 BCCA national specialty show. Linda has reached out to AKC They offered Jan 2-4
We don’t have to give the October dates up - we can skip one year and still retain them for 2026, should January not work out and want to go back to October
Motion to approve hosting the agility trials January 2-4, 2026, rather than October 25-27, 2025 (Lynne Corn, Laura Colombo seconded, Robin, Tony, Linda, Casey yay, Diane Spinelli - abstain) (Post Meeting Comment: Dates were filled by another club and we did not get this trial date)
Motion to adjourn (Laura, Lynne seconded) 6:19pm
