An Important Note From Your School Counselors:
We hope that everyone’s year is off to a good start! Beginning the last week of September/first week of October, school counselors will be teaching personal body safety lessons. This lesson is a requirement by South Carolina law. Erin’s Law mandates that all schools provide age appropriate instruction in sexual abuse awareness and prevention. The purpose of the required instruction is to empower children to trust their feelings, recognize and report child sexual/physical abuse, and advocate for their needs.
To meet the requirements of Erin’s Law, students must understand the difference between safe touches and unsafe touches; safe secrets and unsafe secrets; and the importance of telling a trusted adult right away. If you would like more information about Erin’s Law please visit http://erinslaw.org.
Please read and discuss the following information with your child:
● Your body belongs to you. No one should touch your body without your permission.
● Your private areas are the areas of your body that are covered by a bathing suit. These private areas should never be touched by someone.
● If anyone ever touches you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable you need to tell a trusted adult right away.
● Sometimes, a person who touches you in a private area may tell you to keep it a secret. This is a secret that should NEVER be kept.
● The difference between a safe secret (surprise party for your grandmother, secret handshake with a friend, flowers for mother's day, etc.) and an unsafe secret (someone touches you in your private area,
someone is hurting you, someone tells you to keep a secret from your parents, etc.)
● If someone tries to touch you in a private area, tell them to stop and get away as quickly as you can.
Thank you and feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
