Meeting Recap
The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 13 at Memorial School in Tinley Park.
The Board recognized four Young Authors students who were chosen as the winners for their grade bracket for the 2024 program. One winner was chosen in each of the following grades: Kindergarten and 1st Grade, 2nd and 3rd Grade, 4th and 5th Grade, and 6th through 8th Grade.
Young Authors sponsor Carrie Piet introduced the following students to the Board: Anya Kleis (7th Grade, CMS), Genevieve Hicks (5th Grade, Kruse Education Center), Emily Silva (2nd Grade, Kruse Education Center), and Michael Landeros (1st Grade, Fulton School).
During the meeting, the Board heard the following from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
- Last week, the District celebrated Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. Dr. Stawick thanked all District 146 staff members for everything they do and thanked the Board for the luncheons and gifts for staff.
- Registration for the Joint Annual Conference will be opening in June. The District will register all board members unless they let Dr. Stawick know they are unable to attend.
- The District is partnering with six other school districts for a food service contract. The Illinois State Board of Education has approved the RFP specs, which were advertised and sent to interested companies. There has been a pre-bid meeting and a taste-testing from all interested bidders. Final proposals and bids are due on June 10, with a final decision made by June 17. This timeline will require a Special Board Meeting to approve the contract.
- Marian Betley, the District’s Nurse Coordinator and CMS School Nurse, was recognized by the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA) for her work in community outreach and her partnership with the communication department.
The Board also heard the following:

- The Teachers Union President informed the Board about learning and events occurring each of the schools. She told the Board that staff and students are gearing up for the end of the year with exciting activities.
- The ESP Union President told the Board they are currently electing officers for next school year. She also stated that students and staff had a great time at the District’s Special Olympics held at the beginning of the month.
- At the June Board meeting, Dr. Stawick will ask the Board to approve their participation in Board professional development programs. School Code requires the Board attend these sessions and approve the expenditures annually.
- A two-year contract proposal was submitted by ABC Transportation for the District’s general transportation service. The Board will be asked to approve the contract at the regular June meeting.
