First day of college for WHS apprenticeship cohort
Students Could Earn Three College Credits
This semester, students are traveling to CCBC for the course which will bolster their related instruction skills, a requirement for students taking part in the Apprenticeship Maryland Program.
The 20-member cohort are preparing for apprenticeship placements this summer. Thank you Ms. Crockett, WHS Resource Teacher, for helping provide our students with this opportunity and Mr. Freeze, Apprenticeship Maryland Program Instructor, for providing lessons that prepared our students for successful completion of this course.
Career exploration trips have taken WHS students to the White House ...
Ms. France is a business educator, within the CTE department at Woodlawn Senior High School. Ms. France founded The Woodlawn’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy of Excellence, a young women’s mentorship program. Earlier in the year, Ms. France was invited to The White House for a tour, and was allowed to bring along 25 young women, and she also extended an invitation to our amazing leader, Principal Jernigan.
The tour gave the young women an eye-opening experience that allowed everyone to gather a historical perspective of The White House, and the significance of what it means to be an American. Visiting the White House, brought about self-reflection, and self-awareness, which enlightened the young women; moreover, provided the message, that in life many things are possible!
The illustrations and artwork that adorned the walls displayed images of influential thought leaders, dignitaries, change agents, and world humanitarians, such as Nelson Mandela, and Elvis Presley. The young women were provided with a historical perspective of working in the White House. The students were able to gather an understanding of the systems of the global economy that produces a myriad of unlimited professional career opportunities.
After the tour, students gathered with Principal Jernigan and Ms. France for lunch, to engage in a discussion about career exploration. The responses provided by the students were thought provoking.
Ms. France believes that Self Mastery is the greatest gift that a person can have. Self-Mastery is a much-needed tool that is necessary to add to a person's toolbox. Having a tool like self-mastery affords nearly anyone a baseline that will help to get the job done.
To Capitol Technology University to learn about careers in cyber security ...
To McDaniel College to learn about the school's program offerings ...
Students have also visited Coppin State University, the National Museum of the Marine Corps as part of our military career exploration, Baltimore Electrical JATC, American Trade School and much more. The exploration will continue this summer with the school's career exploration camps.
Congratulations to our Project Lead the Way Engineering students ...
Fifteen Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering students recently earned their AutoDesk Inventor Certification. Providing instruction and opportunities that will assist student in earning industry certifications is one of the hallmarks of Woodlawn's program.
Thank you Ms. Joe, PLTW Engineering Coordinator and Ms. Hinton, PLTW Engineering Instructor for the time spent preparing our students to be succesful!
Partnering with the Community to Advance Career Exploration
Woodlawn High School's Art and Career and Technical Education Departments partnered with Johnnycake Elementary School and its community school facilitator Rachel Valsing for a Career Exploration Event.
Community members learned about WHS programs and the connection to future careers. Attendees were also able to view student artwork from all area elementary and middle schools.
Ms. Caputo, the Art Department Chair at Woodlawn High, reached out to art teachers at local schools to ensure far-reaching participation. Ms. Joe, PLTW Engineering Coordinator and Ms. Louden, CTE Department Chair, provided stations with hands-on activities.
Our PLTW Biomedical seniors were also on-hand to present their capstone projects. Thank you Ms. Rajamani, PLTW Coordinator, Ms. Hiles, PLTW Biomedical Science Instructor, and Dr. Behneman, PLTW Biomedical Science Instructor, for assisting students in their project completion.
Ms. Dowery, ProStart Instructor, and her students created tasty, mouthwatering treats and Mr. Otto, PLTW Engineering Instructor, showcased the school's robotics club. A community school table allowed for the sharing of information about our area schools.
If you are interested in meeting with our students and providing information about your current position, please contact Ms. Joyner, jjoyner2@bcps.org, or Ms. Dixon, ndixon2@bcps.org.

Healthcare Exploration Event
Woodlawn High School will host a career exploration event on May 8, 2024. This will be an opportunity to learn about career opportunities in the field of healthcare.
The healthcare field is one of the fastest growing industries. There is an increased demand for healthcare workers (doctors, pharmacists, forensic scientists and epidemiologists), and a lack of skilled young people training to become professionals working in this career cluster. Woodlawn High School will host a Career Exploration Event focusing on healthcare. During this event, students will:
- Learn about careers in the healthcare field.
- Explore program offerings at Woodlawn High School that will prepare students for employment in the healthcare industry.
- Discover the skills needed to be a successful worker.
- Participate in lab experiments related to careers in the healthcare field.
- Interact with WHS students preparing for a job in the healthcare field.
Students must register to attend!
Woodlawn's NJROTC took part in the Fun Fun Games at Franklin High School
The event's goal is to build physical fitness, boost morale, and increase comradery amongst JROTC schools across the county through competition.
