News & Announcements
National Signing Day
Today is National Signing Day and more than 30 Cumberland Valley High School student-athletes were recognized at the Dome, where they signed their National Letter of Intent to continue on in their sport at the D1, D2, or D3 collegiate level. They were surrounded by family, friends, coaches, teachers, counselors, and more. Visit our official Facebook page for a full album of photos (www.facebook.com/CVschools).
COMING SOON! New website and mobile app
We are excited to share that our Board of School Directors approved a new website, automated notification system, and mobile app vendor on Monday evening. Over the next few weeks, our team will begin to design and develop a new site and, over the next few months, migrate content from our existing website to the new site.
Our hope is that the new website is modern, updated, and user-friendly, while the implementation of a mobile app will provide an additional method for us to connect with our school community. As we work through the design process, we will take into consideration the feedback that our stakeholders have provided in terms of look and feel, navigation, and content.
We are hoping to officially migrate to the new site in July. Stay tuned for more updates as we work through this process.
Online kindergarten registration is now open for the Class of 2037 and the 2024-25 school year. To be eligible for kindergarten, students must turn five years old on or before September 1, 2024. It’s not an overstatement to say kids are distracted by their phones. We all are. But what does this do to their ability to take care of themselves? In terms of personal safety, it creates a perfect opportunity for them to stumble into very dangerous situations.
Encourage your kid to walk with their head held up, eyes scanning the environment, and a mindset dialed into the present. Dangerous people target individuals who are easy prey — distracted, unaware, lost — and vulnerable.
Understanding Situational Awareness
Situational awareness comprises three main components: perception, comprehension, and projection.
- Perception involves actively observing and gathering information from the environment.
- Comprehension involves interpreting and understanding the significance of the observed information.
- Projection involves using that understanding to anticipate and predict future events or outcomes.
Benefits of developing situational awareness skills in kids.
- It enhances their safety, helps them make better decisions, and improves their problem-solving abilities.
- It also promotes empathy and social skills by encouraging them to be aware of others’ emotions and needs.
Developing Situational Awareness in Kids
Teaching kids to observe their surroundings.
- Encourage children to actively observe their surroundings by using their senses to notice the sights, sounds, smells, and textures around them. This helps them become more attuned to their environment and increases their awareness.
- Encourage them to notice things like unfamiliar objects, people, or changes in their surroundings. This helps them identify potential risks or dangers.
Teaching kids to interpret and understand their observations.
- Assessing risks and consequences: Teach children to assess risks and consequences based on their observations. Encourage them to consider the potential outcomes of their actions and make decisions that minimize risks and maximize safety.
- Choosing appropriate actions and responses: Guide children to choose appropriate actions and responses based on their observations. Teach them to respond assertively in unsafe situations and seek help from trusted adults when needed.

Portrait of an Eagle: Student Spotlight
Cumberland Valley High School's Boys Basketball team recently gathered to host a community service project for Radiant Hope, which strives to support those impacted by cancer. Together, the team assembled care packages and wrote notes of encouragement for local oncology patients. But just as impactful were the presentations by two cancer survivors, who talked to the team about what it meant to them personally to receive care packages during their fight. Our Eagles are empathetic! They are a Portrait of an Eagle. Photo courtesy Trisha Comstock.
